visit to Qassim

I was still half asleep when Jay called up early this morning to remind me of our trip to Qassim. I was still tired but I could not say no to our Area 1 governor. I already begged off last month, I felt it is not appropriate to turn him down again. As sponsor of the newly minted First Qassim Toastmasters Club, I felt that I have the obligation to show up and provide the much needed educational session for the club.

There were eight of us in the visiting party. Former governor TM Hassan Maghasel, Area 1 Asst Gov for Marketing TM Ilias, Riyadh Toastmasters president TM Mohammed Mohsin, and TM Jay in the first car. I was the driver on the second car and with me are the president and the VP-Education of the Arabian Stallions Toastmasters Club, and another TM whom I forgot the name.

We left Riyadh at around 9:30am and was expecting to reach Buraidah city at around 1:00pm for the 350+ kilometers journey. I initially thought of cutting it to 12:30pm but I hold back upon realizing the road was a steep downhill ravine. Even without putting on gas on the engine, my car was running at 180kph and could have gone faster if I didn't occasionally step on the brakes. Two hours later, we were caught in a huge sandstorm. Visibility was near zero and the farthest distance that I can see was around 10 meters. When I notice that I can no longer see the blinking signal of the cars ahead of us, I slowed down to 60kph. Good heavens, after an hour in that ordeal we pass by the sandstorm safe and sound.

My party arrived at 12:29pm, 15 minutes ahead of the second party. That gave us enough breather to relax and prepare ourselves for the meeting. That's why, we were in better shape when we meet our counterpart at Qassim Toastmasters Club.

* * * * *

I was surprised to see so many participants in the meeting. There were over 30 young Saudis who showed so much enthusiasm and promise. They never showed hesitation when call to speak in the lectern and gee... they were smart! Honestly, these bunch of Saudis impressed me so much it actually erase my long-held stereotype notion that Saudis are stupid. I am totally convinced with their quality that I declared in the meeting that in just few years, these new breed of Toastmasters will sweep the competition in the District. They are really good!

We enjoyed the sessions so much it took us 3 and a half hours to complete the meeting. After exchanging few pleasantries, we bid adieu and left Buraidah at 5:45pm.

Our trip back to Riyadh was a bit slow. We were running on an uphill road and aside from the dark roadside, the sandstorm was still raging strong. It was already zero visibility with less than 3 meters recognition/warning window, and we could feel the wind was pushing the car sideways. We saw several accidents along the way and those scenes prompted me to slow down. I was forced to run at 15kph on a super highway. Hah! My fist time.

An hour later, we got a clear view of the sky. Finally, was pass by the sand storm belt and literally saw a well lit road side. Like a vengeful hyena, I push the gas pedal to the max and keep up the speed at 160kph. Other vehicles also did the same which resulted to a mini race on the super highway. Then... a sudden blinding flash hit us from the dark hillside. I realized, I got caught for over speeding. Tsk.. tsk.. tsk... that's SR300.

Well, after four hours of travel we arrive in Riyadh safe and sound.

blessed Christmas

I must have tamed the wild animal in me or perhaps had caged the rumbling devil in my back because this year, I received so much blessings and peace of mind. Was it my effort? Nah... this old rotten potato could never change by myself. I needs God to mend my ways. Well folks, I am not ashamed to admit... He changed my ways!

It's been two years in a row and I got the ultimate blessing of celebrating Christmas with my wife and two lovely kids. They were me here in Saudi since Sept 2009 and with the ways things are going, it looks like we are going to stay here much longer. Mommy would definitely agree on that. What else could she asked for? My family is now complete, we have peace of mind, we are involved in church community, and we have Toastmasters as social community. I still have photography though not that extreme relative to my hey days in Singapore.

Conclusion: the kids are happy, mommy is happy, and I am ... hehehe... happy too!

I should praise and thanks God for this wonderful blessing

2nd in Table Topics

There is a saying that goes: "A prophet is often not recognized in his land"

I think this is true. TM Reina beat me in the recently concluded Table Topics Club Level Contest. To make it worse, my moles said that I won over TM Ruben by barely one (1) point. Gee, is that how bad my performance was? What hurts the most was for my always supportive wife to declare "Your answer was far too off".

Arggg…. That nailed it. I don't have my touch anymore.

The question

As technology increases, our capacity to experience life to fullest diminishes.

Whoever coined this question must have gas spasm and diarrhea. I hate you TM Willy. Hehehehhee. Seriously, the question was indeed challenging and thought provoking. I didn't know how the contestants answered the question because I was the last speaker. What I was more interested was to learn how TM Reina and TM Ruben answered the question. Bitter! weehehe…

My answer

Anyway, I attacked the question using my signature chronological + contrast and comparison technique. I started with Alexander-the-great complaining that he is running out of "worlds" to conquer and fears that he may not experience life's full potential. I jump to Roman Empire when emperors declared Pax Romana with a subtle message that they achieve life potential in the absence of war. Lastly I cited the British Golden Era when the great minds of the time declared that human civilization reached its peak because they discovered everything there is in the world.

I made a contrast and comparison that the definition of "experiencing life to the fullest" varies from one era or civilization to another. What was defined before as "life to the fullest may not be applicable in today's setting"! Travelling across great seas was the "ultimate experience" in the Victorian era. That is just a day's experience in today's standard. To experience playing basketball with the pro would be an "experience" 10 years ago. Today, you can do that over Playstation or Nintendo WII player.

Summing it up, I discuss that: technology therefore does not diminish our capacity to experience life to the fullest. It changes the context, the level, and the definition of experiencing life to the fullest.

I parting, I challenge the audience with the following lines: I have live my life to the fullest according the definition of my era – the 80s. I would not expect and will certainly not force my son and daughter to go walk the path that I took because I know they will have their own definition of what is life to the fullest. The challenge therefore is… are you aware of their needs. Are you sensitive enough to understand that our ways is not the ways of the new generation? Can you accept that we are already outdated?

You got it?

See… I didn't mess up with my answer. Perhaps, they are just too naïve to understand my awesomeness! Wahahahhaa… bitter! Weeeee

The blog of Doc Albert

I guess, it was ages since I took time to write something of my blog. I would know, because my handful followers already struck me out of their friends list. Which makes me wonder why, in the first place, did they read my uninteresting blog?

Then out of the blue, my office mate Arwin gave me a link to the blog of Doc Albert. Honestly, I was not interested - I don't want to read blogs of other people - but curiosity creeps in and yes, I gave in. When open up the site and and started reading, I failed to realized that I got totally hooked. I was laughing and giggling the entire day. Doc Albert writes excellent blog and he masterfully mixes humor, satire, and common sense. I believe I spend more than half of my working hours... reading his blog.

11th Wedding Anniversary

Time Flies, eh?

I thought it was just yesterday. I still vividly remember what happened on that eventful Dec 18 wedding: an hour late groom, 232 wedding guest, regla night, and the candle fiasco involving my boss' wife and my war-freak auntie Denday. That fiasco actually defined, or should I say, derailed my career. Joseph, my then boss, shelved my promotion! Grrr… I will never forget.

Back to reality! I was planning to gift my wife with the much hype iPhone4. I thought, not only she would surely like it she will look more gorgeous with an iPhone instead of an outdated Sony-Ericsson K330 in her hand. I know that price is restrictive at SR 4300 (over US1000) but what the heck. It's our anniversary date.

No Stock

Just when you decided to buy the most expensive smartphone, there is no stock in the market. Geez, what a bummer! The salesman at Jarir Bookstore offered me two options: an old model iPhone 3Gs at SR2399 or the Blackberry Curve 9300 at SR1399. My initial choice was the iPhone but thinking my wife doesn't need much of the functionality of the iPhone, I decided to choose the blackberry. Come to think, I originally preferred iPhone4 solely on branding & "in" factors – not the functionality.

I choose the red blackberry curve 9300.

Simbang Gabi & Dinner

Before going to our planned dinner date, we first attended the 8pm simbang gabi schedule at Tito Wilson house. We the ask Father Francis, who officiated the mass, to pray for us and gave us blessing. After that, we went to Steaky House for sumptuous meal.

Beautiful night

Actually, there was nothing fancy with our dinner. Simple, private and nothing more... but I like it. We have time for each other and we enjoy each other's company even after 11 years of married life.

As for the gift, she was of course, super surprised. She loved her new smartphone.

Winning the Table Topics Contest at ToC

"Dinaan mo lang sa delivery, kaya ka nanalo (it was through delivery why you won)" TM James quipped.

TM Richard shared the same sentiment that's why I didn't win in their score sheets. Would you believe, they prefer TM Monching Austria over me? Personally, I may agree with these two bitches. It is not because they truly knew me and my gulat (wow) factor no longer works with them, but because I also found my answer wanting.

The table topics question was "What would you prefer: Intelligence or Common Sense and why?"

How I answered the question

I attack the question using the situation in the house this morning where mommy was angry with me for not helping her in the household chores. "Helping your partner is common sense", she said.

And then I dissected the definition of common sense as a set of rules both spoken and unspoken on how an individual should act in a civil society. I made a chronological comparison that the definition of common sense during the stone-age era, during the time of Alexander the Great, and in our Technology-age era varies greatly. What is common sense today may not be the case a thousand years ago. I made a transition to Intelligence by explaining that some people do not adhere to the homogeneity of a society. These are the bigots who dare challenge the de-facto. These are people who dare to be different. As an example, I cited Albert Einstein who does not comb his hair – combing is common sense – because he is fully preoccupied to his science. Another example that I used was Shakespeare, whom I claimed, write his poems and novel while being naked. Exposing oneself naked for too long in Europe environment was an open invitation to sickness and disease. Common sense dictates that you should not do that.

I anchored my conclusion that I would prefer Intelligence over Common Sense because I want to be different. I don't want to be an ordinary Toastmaster. I want to walk paths that is less taken – set up new clubs despite pessimism among colleagues. I don't want to sit down and wait for the club to bring excitement. I want to stand up, get myself involve, and help carry the club into new heights of achievements.

In parting, I challenge the audience saying "Fellow Toastmasters, I made my choice; what about you?"

Winning it

After delivering my speech, I immediately left the contest session. I still have a party - our CFC household Christmas party - to attend. I didn't tell mommy that I joined the contest. If I did, she might not permit. I just made an alibi that I have to go to the office.

I was still on my way to Tito Wilson's house when TM Jay called. He told me the good news that I was declared champion in the Table Topics contest. TM Monching Austria was 2nd and TM Jou Pabalate 3rd. An hour later, TM James informed me of the same news. It was that time when he confided that I did not get the 1st place in his score sheet. Likewise with that of Richard's.

Well.. they may not give me their nod but I got the remaining judges: TM Abs Yasin, TM Enrico Abad, TM Rod Ganzon, TM Leila Corres, TM Akram, TM Omar.

I got elected as BOD

The only reason why I am still connected with the Computer Society of Filipinos (Comsofil) is the photography class. Personally, I found solace in teaching photography aside from the fact that it has serve as my only link to my old self - the photo addict SoJ. On the larger perspective, my photo class serves as a natural source of new members for the Shutter's Guild.

For the past two years, I was happy just being a simply instructor. It never crossed in my mind to get myself drawn deep into the organization, until that eventful night of Oct 1, 2010. From that day on, I bowed to run as Board of Director and "see" what really is inside. From that day on, I bowed, never again shall the Shutter's Guild be accused of any misdemeanor.

The entire Shutters Guild was solid behind my back and they relentlessly campaigned for me among the students. The Toastmasters with the leadership of TM Erlinda made sure that my application would be accepted and I would have good representation among the instructors. Even if I only manage to perform limited personal campaign (due to other commitments), the concerted efforts of my supporter was more than enough to get me through.

I was elected as the 8th of the 16 Board of Directors for the Year 2011.

Toastmaster of the Year

I am beaming with a naughty smile! Hehehehe

Bear with me for being a little "evil" today. I am still savoring my victory for the quest of Toastmaster of the Year.

For one, I beat the competition fair-and-square. There was no last minute "rigging" on the point system – which reminds me of what happened last year when the awards committee changed the parameters and points on the last minute. I still harbor this ill feeling that the motive behind that move was to rob me of 4,000 points. Second, I won with a run-away margin over the second placer TM Roi. Read this: 49,500 vs. 32,000 hah! That is a clear victory compare last year where I lost, yes I already conceded, with only 700 points difference. Lastly, I earned the points through labor of love. Imagine conducting over 30 educational sessions and speaking engagements, bringing in 13 new members, setting up 4 new clubs – a record of its own, YLP and Speecraft programs, and achieving 5 Toastmasters norm – another record of its own. Not to mention, winning contests in the club and the Area on Table Topics, Humorous Speech, and International Speech.

Overall, I served Toastmasters in the club, the area, and the district with almost all my energy and time. Yes, I could say I have more than enough this year.

Benefits

Now that I am the Toastmaster of the Year, what then?

I guess nothing. I'm still the same fat, chubby, and happy TM Nathan. I will still attend regular meetings, help Filcom-IT club, assist TM Jay with new clubs. This time, however, it will be at a mellowed intensity.

I believe the biggest lesson I learned on my journey with Toastmastering is not so much on the speaking skills. It was more on developing my skills in the avenue of leadership. In fact the 15th anniversary was my litmus test and though I barely pass, I could say… "now I know".

DTM

With ACG Norm in my sleeves and Leadership Excellence norm by next week, the only remaining hurdle for me to reach the ultimate norm – The Distinguished Toastmater (DTM) – is to serve as elected officer in the district. The easiest path would be to serve as Area Governor this coming July 2011.

For the meantime, I will offer my speaking and leadership skills in the service of my Creator and my God, through Couples for Christ Foundation for Families and Life (CFCFFL).

PRTC 15th “Crystal” Anniversary – the making

My father used to say "Great challenges separate the Boys from among Men"!

Always, I bragged that I can manage. I know how to ask someone to work or perform specific task. This confidence was grounded on the premise that I got good managerial skills and had handled a number of projects to my credit. But this time, I fought, lost most of the battles and... barely won the war!

When I thought I could handle the chairmanship of the PRTC 15th Anniversary with ease, I was dead wrong!

Yearbook Project

It all started sometime in July when TM James shot an idea of compiling all the accomplishments PRTC and then print it like a yearbook. When I disclose this idea to some of my close friends in the club, they were all positive and supportive. They even suggested that I can use this as a project for my Leadership Excellence norm with Toastmasters International. Emboldened by the prospect of making a legacy for PRTC, I took the challenge of heading the 15th anniversary of PRTC. By August I formed the committees, started sending emails to inactive members explaining my purpose and at the same time soliciting for ideas how to improve it. TM Ramed Borja, TM Fritz Armada in Dubai, TM Obet Geronimo, and TM Ditas Tiamzon were among the first to respond and supported the project.

After long deliberation and exchanges of emails, we finally decided to hold a formal anniversary party with a Masquerade Theme – Parisian Style. Ladies were requested to wear evening gown plus mask and the men with tuxedo or coat plus mask. When it was announced in the club, there was overwhelming excitement and anticipations.

To our surprise, TM Oscar Vanderlipe declared that he will sponsor two round trip tickets to any destination to Europe for the winners of the best costume of the night.

Time table

By September, the Executive Committee (Execom) officially sanctioned the project and designated me as the chairman for the Crystal Anniversary.

I thought I had a good lead time, but the months of September and October came and go like a breeze. The tight PRTC schedule of activities and long holidays screwed our timetable and handicapped most of my committees. We failed to meet even once and I rely solely on emails and phone calls to coordinate with the team. Much as wanted to force them to set a deadline, I know I cannot do that. They were volunteers and not my subordinates. All I can do was ask for favor and wait.

By mid November, I started to borrow the Execom time and inserted anniversary as main agenda in the meeting. Thankfully, the beautiful people of Execom indulge my intrusion. Some members of the anniversary committees also joined such as TM James who heads the souvenir committee, TM Richard for the invitations, and TM Willy for the decorations. And almost all members of the Execom became part of the anniversary committee. TM Reina handled the awards, TM Arnold as assistant chair, TM Rolly for finance, TM Guiller and TM Sheila for concept and design, TM Perlito for invitation, and TM Roi for the program.

TM Ron's Case

Since September, we've been marketing that Dec 16 would be the anniversary date. Hearing no reactions from the members, we concluded that this would be an acceptable date for everyone. We even announced it to all other Toastmasters Club in the Division. Then on Nov 16th, after our regular toastmasters meeting, TM Ron started to question why we scheduled the anniversary on Dec 16th? He argued that by tradition, the anniversary should be on the first week of December or 10th at the most. TM Reina stood up and explained to the body that this was part of the term-schedule that was announce last September and was properly aligned between PRTC activities to give the Execom some breathing space.

I initially wondered why TM Ron questioned the schedule where in fact, he knew from the start and he didn't object. Later I discovered that he may not be able to attend the party because his vacation schedule was set on Dec 15th. Personally, I don't want TM Ron to miss the anniversary on two grounds: he is the recipient of most awards and he is the fulcrum of the party – he can easily swing the mood of the party to vibrant tempo. That is why I lobbied to the committee to move the date from Dec 16 to Dec 9. There were violent reactions, believe me, and I almost got crushed by the heavy opposition had it not been with TM Arnold who stood by my side.

I fully understand the furor of the committee. We were running out of time, we were financially flat broke, and we don't have warm bodies to execute the plans. TM Rolly has not started the collection and failed to produce a decent solicitation letter. TM James started to show paranoia on the possibility of completing the souvenir in time. We don't have layout, zero pictures, not even one article and we barely have a month to finish all. Only TM Sheila was upbeat enough to complete the marketing campaign and the concept design. As a leverage, TM Arnold and myself volunteered to shoulder the initial expense on the premise that the club will pay us in due time.

By November 23rd, we officially announce to the club that the party would be on Dec 9, 2010.

Crunch Time

The change brought havoc to our schedules.

The last day of submission for the application of the "The Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year" was moved a week earlier, we need to change the guest speaker due to unavailability of the Philippine Ambassador on the new date, we reduced the number of expected participants from 100+ to less than 60, and the harshest change: we reduce the pages of the anniversary souvenir by almost half. After removing the articles, 20 plus pages of pictures, highlights per president, and highlights of area governors – we were

left with only 66 pages. A far cry from the planned 150 pages!

Bleeding Time

The events during the week of the anniversary were so tense and mind blowing, I almost gave up. I even swear "this will be the last and I will never be involved again with Toastmasters". Honestly, there was pinch of truth when I uttered those words.

I was frustrated with my team. My committees failed to deliver the simple task assigned to them. TM Roi sat on the program too long and when I criticize his obviously run-the-mill programme, he went ballistic. I pointed out that he should have at least given the program some thought and not use recycled and uneventful sequences. TM Rolly failed to collect fees and for that I have to use my personal monies. Yes, I have to close my eyes when I bleed over SR3700 to cover all ends. Oh, I bought 40 pieces of assorted beautiful mask for everyone and that is aside from the 66 gifts my wife prepared. Another headache was TM James. He asked too much of my time when he assigned me to prepare the photo-timeline of PRTC. That alone took 3 days of my life. And to see him redoing what I

did, that was simply discouraging. Why didn't he do it himself in the first place? I could have used three days as a wide window for hunting possible donors and sponsors. And don't ask how difficult it was to find a printer that would deliver 80 copies in a day. I want to forget those horrendous moments.

But all of the above pain was bearable. I have resigned to the fact that these people were volunteers and not my minions. I have to make do of whatever was available and who were willing.

What had driven me to madness were those times when members – particularly inactive members – started complaining that I have not done enough for the anniversary. To add insult to the injury, these members insinuated that they may not come (I read boycott) due to security reasons. I did beg, bow down, swallowed mountain-full of pride (and saliva), and cried wolf just to convince them to come. Yet, they were cold and critical to the end.

During these crucial times I admit it was my beloved wife who kept my sanity intact. She was with me from planning, preparation and execution. Had it not been with her, I had easily given up.

Party Time

Now I fully understand why party goers often see only the glam and lime lights and do not appreciate the preparation that comes with it. We go to the party and enjoy – not talk about the bad things on it.

When the spot lights started shining, the camera flashes started firing, and when the guest in their gorgeous dresses started littering the ballroom area, all my qualms complains and pains simply vanish in the air. The overwhelming joy of watching the show running smoothly and successfully lifted my spirit. It was a thousand times more than enough to pay for our ordeal.

My wife was simply stunning with her peacock ensemble. She won the best costume for female category. On the other hand, TM Jojo in his Phantom-of-the-Opera suit won the male category, and Sarah Perez in her super sexy night dress with elaborate mask won the guest category.

There were small lapses along the way but it was too minor to notice. Overall, we have festive one-of-a-kind and a memorable masquerade party where everyone was enjoying.

Learning by doing

I was happy, not only because I won the Toastmaster of the Year award, but because that night I have proven to myself I can also be a leader and not just a manager.

Finally, Advance Communicator Gold

After two years and nine months, 40+ speeches, several dozens of Educational Sessions, 4 YLP programs, 3 Speechcraft programs, and numerous minor meeting roles, I finally achieve my Advance Communicator Gold norm.

It was not easy, believe me. I changed two manuals along the way. I started two projects from the Humorously Speaking manual before switching to Storytelling manual, and I also started one project from Public Relation manual before switching to The Entertaining Speaker manual. It was also difficult to find evaluators because there were only a handful advance Toastmasters even outside our club. Most of the CC Toastmasters were too afraid to evaluate thinking I am already a veteran.

I know this is long overdue. It was ages, April 28 to be exact, since I received my Advance Communicator Silver. Our VP for Education, TM Reina, had been bugging since June to complete my ACG norm but during the past six months, I dilly-dally. Instead of delivering speeches, I concentrated on Educational Sessions and setting up new clubs.

Hey, I already have four clubs up in my sleeves as of now. That is a record in PRTC and in Area 5 as well.

Ron is now a DTM

"You deserve it and it's been long overdue". I smiled as an utter those words to TM Ron Jacobe.

Ron finally received his Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) from the headquarters of Toastmasters International. "He deserves it" is actually an understatement. Ron is known in the Toastmasters circle as the best speaker of Saudi Arabia aside from being a proven leader. "It's long overdue", simply because Ron achieved all the requirements for DTM since 2005. All he has to do, actually, was file the form and submit it to TI, but he didn't do it.

The people behind it

Three years ago, when I asked him why, he simply answered "I lost faith on the norms of Toastmasters." I couldn't blame TM Ron for thinking that way. When I look around Riyadh and gauge the quality of DTMs, I was just disappointed. None of them bears a semblance of a good quality speaker and none of them has the caliber to be a good leader. Ron explained, being associated to these DTMs "kuno" is what he fears most.

Then two years ago, I made it my mission to convince him to get the DTM norm. I want to prove to the Toastmasters community that there exists a "real" DTM in the person of DTM Ron. At first, I was polite in asking for his records and certificates of which he responded with a smile and a promise to give it to me. And yes, I waited but only to be frustrated that after a year, no paper ever arrived on my hands.

Finally last year, I decided not to wait anymore. I actively search his records from the archives of the club and sent numerous communications to the TI headquarters. We complained on the error of his CL norm which was rectified by TI on Feb 2010. Next step was to verify the year he served as Area Governor for Area 5. By May, the TI headquarters rectified their records and officially recognized that Ron served as Area Governor. Sometime in August, I started searching for High Performance Leadership Program manual. I tried contacting TM Jay Magh of Area 1, TM James of Area 5, and even talk to division governor TM Abraham Daniel. Nobody help me get one. Left with no choice, I ordered the manuals from Toastmasters International headquarters – using my own monies.

I talked to Ron about my plan of using the Ginoo and Binibining Pilipinas 2010 pageant as his project for HPLP. Again, he just smiled showing a hint that he agrees. I took it as a yes, having heard no objection at all. After the pageant night on October 17, I started working of the paper works of Ron's Leadership Excellence norm. I asked TM Roi Ontiveros, TM Gerry Villaraiz, TM Perlito Amarante, and TM James Taruc to sign the papers and pose as assistance coordinators for the project.

By Nov 10, I asked TM Reina to submit the papers via email and attached the scanned copies of the HPLP project. A week later, I saw from the TI website that TM Ron was awarded with the LDREXC norm. I immediately instructed TM Reina to submit the application for Advance Leader Silver. By Nov 28, we filled the Distinguished Toastmaster norm for TM Ron. Since the application is online, we received the confirmation right after.

Finally, Ron is now a DTM

Obeth and his Ma'salamah Party

I met Obet Geronimo sometime in May of 2008 in a badminton session at Sunrise International School. He was a person who was soft spoken, friendly and unassuming. Together with Anthony Manabat - my buddy that time - we regularly meet every Saturday for a Badminton session. It was Obet who conceptualize and help establish a new club that adheres to basic tenets of camaraderie, sharing and fair play. Together with the help of Egay Santa Maria, Dan and a handful other members (including me), Obet became the first president of Circle of Pinoy Shuttlers (COPS) badminton club.

Obet showed great leadership during his term as president. But even before COPS was formalized, I already saw Obet's qualities. One time, when we had a talk, he confided to me that he develop this skills through Toastmasters. My eyes went wide when I learned that he was one of the founding member of the PICPA Riyadh Toastmasters Club. He was once the president of the club and was considered one of the best speaker in the Arabian Gulf. He left the Toastmasters sometime in 2002 because of personal difference with some members of the club. (It was with Ron, I heard, hehehehe).

* * * * * *
I didn't hear much of Obet since I went inactive with COPS last Sep 2009. Yes, he send occasional email from time to time but nothing memorable that I can remember. Then last week, he invited me to attend his ma'asalamah (farewell) party. He confided that he is leaving Saudi Arabia for good. With heavy heart, he said, he would try to leave behind 21 years of memories here in the desert land of Riyadh and hopes to build a new life in Australia.

I could say, Obet spent too long in this land and has build a large network of friends. It's obvious. His friends came and flock his party that almost filled the GSO American Annex Gym. There were tons of food & drinks, fun filled program, and nice band who rocks the party wild.

I was there, of course, with mommy Pinky. We enjoyed the party and we spent the night dancing. Gee... it was a beautiful fun night.

Obet, wherever you go... from your friend Nathan and Family... we wish you all the luck!

Cancelled Qassim Visit

As co-founder of the First Qassim Toastmaster Club, it was my duty to visit the club at least once and then conduct educational sessions that would help the club grow. This is one responsibility that I have not done yet since the chartering of the new club.

TM Jay and I schedule a visit today at Buraidah to attend the FQTM meeting. As assistant governor for Education, I prepared two educational sessions and I also laid out some club success plan for the club officers to use as guide.

Every thing was set when an unexpected emergency call from the office set my schedule into shambles. Last night - past midnight - my boss called up and requested me to report in the office. We have a severity 1 problem at the airport and we need to restore the system within 24 hours. I tried to call TM Jay around 3am but he was already asleep . Then early morning at 6am, I called him again and inform him about my situation. TM Jay silently said, he will still go to Buraidah.

I felt sad because I let down my Area Governor. I know, though, that he understand that this is beyond my control.

Shutter's Guild is growing

Watching the Shutter's Guild conduct their meeting at the house, I could not help but smile.

The small photography group that I started last April has finally came to life, and more than that, it is now growing with sold following and members. I should confess, I have no hand on the growth of the group. All of these came to reality because of the leadership of its president.. Norman Cunanan and a bunch of active officers.

I am sure, this is just the beginning of a successful group in the making. They have a good constitution and by-laws (written by yours truly) and a heart for the craft. It is no longer a question of "if this group will succeed" but "when will this group get its due credit".

I lost my fav coat

For over a month now, I had been looking for my favorite black coat. Initially, I though Donnie borrowed it but later change my suspicion when he ask if he can borrow a coat. This just confirms that the coat was not with him. I checked my car, my drawer, my dresser and even at the PELA room but not a shadow of my coat could be found. Then I remember, I used it during the last Comsofil graduation when I stand in as Master of Ceremonies. I vividly recall hanging the coat on the basketball pole and ... forgot to bring it home.

Upon checking with Celso Ditalo, Comsofil advised that they didn't notice any coat during the cleaning up. After calling several people, I finally found my coat from Sir Ronnie of Elite International School. They kept the coat in their storage and I can pick it up anytime.

Alan gibs and his new hobby

Ever since we visited Alan Guivelondo - the 1st cousin of Pinky - in Jubail City last September, he never fail in keeping in touch with us. He usually send me text messages asking for information regarding his new found hobby in Photography.

Just like today, he text asking for advice on what lens to choose among Canon 18-200, Canon 55-250, Canon 28-135 IS USM, Canon 70-300 IS USM, Tamron 18-270 Di II VC LD. I readily answered that none of the above. Hehehehe... of course, I sent another reply saying that my choice would be the Canon 24-105 L IS f4 for a walk-around lens, that if he has a budget. Otherwise, I would recommend the Tamron 18-270 Di II VC LD. My suggestion was based on experience since I own one and had been using this for over a year already. Quality was acceptable, the range was very good, and focusing speed was above average for this price range.

We exchange several text messages more but it looks like he was not convinced. Few minutes later, Alan called me up. He said he need more explanation because he wants to buy the lens within the day. After given him addition information, he hang up. I believe, he will go for the Tamron.

NASCO Demo Meeting

For the past four months, Area 5 was aggressively working on the expansion of the Area. TM James arranged a demo meeting with NASCO, hoping we can convince them to open up a corporate Toastmaster club. TM Jojo who was working with the company was our contact person. He help us for the venue arrangement and inviting the company workers.

The place was nice - a large conference room, and they provided us with good food accommodation. We have several speakers for the Table Topics and I had the chance to evaluate TM Colin for his prepared speech.

The meeting went smooth, successful but.. uneventful.

Jasmine's 6th B-day

We were used to celebrating grand birthday with our children. Jasmine got four big celebrations while she was in the Philippines and Joshua had one. However, thing change when were arrived here in Riyadh.

Jasmine's 5th birthday celebration in Riyadh International School was a modest McDonald's party. Then this year, her 6th birthday, we only have a classroom party because McDonald's party is not allowed. I know mommy would feel bad about this but I was not worried. I know she understand that we are currently in dire financial situation and we need to prioritize Mama Irene who is currently in the hospital in the Philippines. Anyway, the important thing is that both of us were there during the celebration - something that we were grateful of. I tried to assure her that Jasmine's debut (7th bday) would be grand.

They had simply party but I made sure that Jasmine would have beautiful pictures. I asked Tito Noel Zaragoza - our brethren in the church community - to be there and stand as the official photographer.

Well, he showed up and covered the event. I am still waiting for him to post the pictures, though.

Debate Contest

Last week, mommy was angry with me because I submitted her name among the list of possible contenders for the annual PRTC club debate contest. She got so many alibis not to join but I know, deep inside she was just afraid. Without my knowledge, she successfully convinced their team captain to replace her because of possible conflict of interest. She argued that she just wanted to play safe because I was the assigned chief judge. Lucky for her, they were able to get a last minute replacement.

The contest was a box-office hit. We have several dozen visitors from other Toastmasters Club such as Sand Dunes, Toast of Comsofil, Mabuhay, PSME, Filcom-IT, and some Indian clubs. The debate theme was "Be it resolve that the number of basic education in the Philippine schools be increase from 10 years to 12 years". On the negative side were the team of TM Reina who was the heavy favorite. They have fielded top caliber speakers such as TM Regina, TM Abs, TM Perlito, TM Reina, TM Guiller and TM Shiela. On the other side were the underdogs, who will defend the affirmative side. These were composed of TM Donnie, TM, Ruben, TM Rowell and TM Rollie.

It was a close fight, I admit. Neither of the two teams followed the rules and regulation - just like the way we were two years ago - and most of them were carried with their emotional debating rather than objective debating. In the end, the affirmative had it. On individual awards, TM Reina edge out TM Ruben by 1 point and won the best debater award. TM Donnie was the run-away winner as the best speaker.

Meeting the Comsofil BOD

Last week, TM Erlinda confided that the Comsofil's Board of Directors (BOD) accused me of setting up an organization that may directly compete with Comsofil. They said, Shutter's Guild (SG) has plans of teaching Advance Classes and would take the pool of students from Comsofil.

This false accusation shot my blood to sky high. It is not fair that they would make resolution or decide on anything affecting the SG without giving us due process. The way things are moving with Comsofil, I know they will never give us the chance. Hence, I decided to seek for an audience with the BOD to explain who we are. It was not easy to get the pass because initially, there was a resistance (I heard, coming from Ekart, Domeng Herras and Nora Lao) and only after the president (who was close to me) assured them that I will be neutral, they allowed my presence.

And yes indeed, tonight I stood my ground infront of 16 Comsofil BODs and presented my case. I tried to be polite but Ekart and Benjie gave me a hard time. They throw the kitchen sink, the toilet bowl and all the bad things towards me.

The meat of their inquisition are:
1. SG is directly positioning itself to compete with Comsofil
2. SG is affiliated with Filcom-IT. They claimed that they have evidence
3. SG is using the name of Comsofil without due authorization
4. Me as Comsofil instruction, has conflict of interest because I object to the idea of offering advance classes within Comsofil. They claim that I am planning to do this under SG.

In retaliation, I responded that all these accusations are false. I pointed out that:
1. SG does not compete with Comsofil because all it's member are graduates of Comsofil digital photo class
2. SG is not exclusive and hence may be affiliated to any organization not just Filcom-IT. SG will provide help or service to any community organization whenever invited.
3. SG members are product of Comsofil, hence they can and will use the Comsofil name whether the BOD likes it or not. I argued that unless there is a rule or resolution to say "do not use", we will continue.
4. I argued that photography advance classes is a wide province. Offering such classes would require heavy investments on gears, tools, and would require students to spend hours outside the classroom. Comsofil is not prepared for such requirement.

Despite answering all the question (and bad words) thrown to me, it seems that I failed to convince the two hyenas in the board - namely Ekart and Benjie Cabaya. When they run out of English word, they switch to native tongue (Tagalog) just to try running me to the ground. Combatant and defiant to the end, I stood tall and depended myself. I reminded them that this session should not be an inquisition but a session of clarification. After an hour of exchange of heated arguments, president Buddy finally broke his silence and allowed me to leave the session. He assured me that they will abide with the status quo until further notice.

After leaving the meeting, I felt relieved. Upon witnessing the BOD up close and personal, I now understand what are the kind of people who harangue the likes of TM Erlinda, TM Marlyn, TM Joseph, TM Rod, and Celso. Most of these so called officers are wanna-bees and posers, and I would like to emphasize - unqualified!

I felt so bad with they way they treated me in the session, I promised to run as Board of Director this coming December. I know I can win, and should it be granted... these amphibians will have there day in the sun.

Speechcraft with GBb 2010

As per tradition and just like what we have done in the past two years, PRTC once again sponsored a Speechcraft training with the Ginoo and Binibining Pilipinas 2010 Candidates. TM James spearheaded the training and tap the expertise of mommy pinky, myself, and TM Reina as resource speakers. We also provided the much needed tips and evaluations for each candidates as they answer series of table topics questions. I was impressed with this year's crop. They have a better quality of candidates in both physical and intellectual capacity. I could not help but commend Rani Basanta for his effort.

Unlike last year, we only have a one-day Speechcraft session. It was sad that we didn't have more time with the candidates. Had it been otherwise, we could have trained them better.

It was quick and I didn't had time to get to know the candidates. I honestly say, I didn't enjoy. Well... mommy said, she had a good time. Hehehe... bakit kaya?

that poging lamig asshole!

What would do if someone asked you to relinquish your prime parking slot to a less convenient area? Would you say yes, especially if you earned that prime slot after waiting for a year without any parking area? Of course not! That's definitely what I said when our gym-buff neighbor asked me this favor. He argued that his slot may be tight but it is closer for the door. He wants my slot because it can easily fit his new Toyota Sequoia. Oh, is that so? I just ignore (I actually hide) him.

But then, this poging laming (an assuming cool guy) keep bothering me with calls and even knocking on my door on wee hours. I already said no but he seems not to understand the meaning of "No". He keeps on disturbing us that my wife eventually begged that I give up and move on. I really hate the idea of giving up, but for the sake of having a peaceful coexistence with these insensitive windbags I eventually agreed.

Grrr.... I am still fuming with anger.

Basic Manual Project 2

Gee.. I am getting serious with this Basic Manual Take 2 thing.

I just delivered my project #2 of the Basic Manual this afternoon at Filcom-IT Toastmasters Club. The members gave me a thunderous applause after the speech, and my evaluator showered me with heaps of praises and accolade for the successful delivery. The eyes of new members were filled with enthusiasm and amazement, and I could say, I have inspired them.

But only if they knew, I was totally unprepared before the meeting. Minutes before I was called in front, I was asking TM Marlyn for a good topic for my speech. She told me to deliver a speech about my high school days, which I immediately outlined in my mind.

My speech was about my experience as a young boy who has trouble finding a date for the upcoming prom night. I related the ordeal, humiliation and pain that a teenager would feel when everyone rejected him. The highlight of the story is the conversation between the boy and father emphasizing on the size of heart rather than looks or riches. The twist of the speech - which serves as the conclusion - is my story of first dance, first kiss, and first love with the girl whom eventually I married in the future.

Hehehe... if only they knew of something else (that's my secret!)

Educational Sessions

My Friday schedule today was tight.

At 1pm, I attended the PSME meeting and conducted an Educational Session on Impromptu Speaking from the Better Speaker Series.

I didn't not finished the meeting because at 2pm, I have to deliver another Educational Session with Data-Fil Speechcraft. I delivered a 15 minutes session on Vocal Variety.

Then at 2:30, I proceeded to Future Generation International School to serve as judge on a Photo Exhibit competition conducted by UMIF (United Multimedia International Foundation).

And at 3:20pm, I went back to Al Taj International School to attend the Filcom-IT meeting. I was one of the prepared speech speaker.

At 5pm, I was too already too tired I decided to skip attending the PICPA Induction. I have no role there, anyway.

40 lbs in 3 Months

Wishful thinking, isn't?

But seriously, I want to loose 40 pounds by December of 2010. Not only for health reasons but I want too look good again.

Last week, my wife blurted out that I look not just ugly... but I am now despicable and loathsome. Coming from my wife, that is more than a double whammy on my face. I guess, she just voiced out what she was keeping in herself for a long time. I believe, this is the right time to address the situation.

Well if I will be successful, then I would be more presentable during our 25th year high school grand reunion. That would be a good motivation, eh?.

Mommy is Now Fine

Good relief. The doctor declared that mommy is now okay and very much ready for action. hehehe... not the action that you are thinking. I meant, mommy is now free to do her regular chores and routine.

Doctor Rowena Zaplan, mommy's OBY-GENE, conducted physical test and requested for several laboratory test since last week. This was actually our our third visit since mommy got sick last month. And finally today, doctor Rowena declared that the mass in her ovary has decreased to less than 2 centimeters. Meaning, mommy is healthy.

Yehey!!!!

Winning Back a Friend

For quite some time now, we "lost" one of our good friend in PRTC. He is one of the pillars of the club, of the most dedicated and the most active Toastmaster I've ever seen. He loves PRTC and there was no doubt about that. A recipient of Loyalty Award, Toastmaster of the Year Award, and a past president, TM Jojo Bollozos has been with the club since 1998.

Then, an unfortunate event happen. The executive committee (execom) did not renew his membership in the Toastmasters International. The result, TM Jojo was dismembered during the 1st term of PY2010-2011 - this term. It was just suppose to be a simple case of late registration because that time, the club didn't have fund to renew member with late payments. But then, we handled the case badly.

The issue muddled up because we (I am part of the execom) didn't meet TM Jojo "eye-to-eye". We failed to properly notify him about the case and then we belatedly and did not sincerely apologized for the mistake. For this, TM Jojo felt upset. Then, he started to veer away from the club.

The current president TM Arnold Valeriano acknowledged that it was largely his fault. He confided to me that initially thought, it was just a case of "tampo" of TM Jojo. But as the days to by, he realized that it was not. Now, he felt that he was the devil in the deep blue sea.

I opened this matter to the immediate past president TM Roi Ontiveros. His initial reaction was "to let this things pass and hope the TM Jojo's anger and tampo will subside". I readily explained to him that this was no longer a case of tampo but a full blown mis-understanding. We thought of setting up a meeting TM Jojo hoping to hear his case and then when needed, apologize in behalf of the execom.

Well, that is what I exactly did this morning. I called up Jojo and tried to reach him by inviting him to a dinner this evening. He politely declined to due to prior appointment, but promised to call back if there are changes in his schedule.

Since I have Jojo on the phone, I took the opportunity to hear from him his side of the issue. He opened up that there was no proper communication prior to renewal and had it been otherwise, he could have find ways to help the club find some funds. I acknowledged the lapses of the present officers, and me being the senior member, I offered my apologies. Toward the end of the conversation, I asked him we can renew/reinstate him back. I further added that I may need his reinstatement as points for my quest for the District 79 Toastmaster of the Year. He politely answered that he will think about it.

An hour later, Jojo called back. He said, he is willing to be reinstated this coming September because he wanted to help me gain the points for the award! He didn't promise to attend regular meetings of the club, but willing to be back as member again.

Whew! That was something for me. Winning back a friend to PRTC is far greater achievement than gaining point for my award.

I am so happy today!

New Sponsor

It's official. Me and the rest of the ITSS5 team now under a new sponsor - the Zuhair Fayez Partnership (ZFP) company.

I just signed a one-year contract with automatic renewal option for three consecutive years. The new contract is basically the same as my old contract with Ejada except for some minute deviation on the benefits. If you ask me, I could say I am happy with the contract. I could not say the same with my colleagues, though. They complained too much and too loud. Hah! I wonder if ever they have satisfaction.

If only they put themselves in proper perspective, they would appreciate that we are far more fortunate than 90% of the expats in Saudi Arabia. Our main employer is a government entity, the Ministry of Interior - National Information Center; our working hours is less than 8 hours a day (7:48 hrs) five days a week; we have less than 50% load most of the time, spend 20% for prayer time, and the rest are spent on senseless meetings; and we can go out of the office anytime we want as long as we complete our man-hour requirements. If not of the Saudi law barring us to be directly employed with the government, we could have also enjoyed the benefits and perks of the locals. While NIC controls our daily work activities, ZFP serves on the other hand serves our Admin and Payroll needs.

I will cross my fingers and hope that this new sponsor - ZFP - will be better than Ejada

Just how fast the little kids grow

God really is good!

Another Thursday morning that is free from hectic schedules and haranguing appointments. I woke up late at past 11am. Mommy is still at the kitchen preparing for our lunch so I stayed in the bedroom for a while and watch my two adorable little kids sleeping.

Gee... how time flies. Jasmine is already 5 years old and Joshua is 2 years old. They look sweet and submissive. But mind you, looks are deceiving. The two bunch of joys are far from sweet and submissive type.

Jasmine - the English speaker - would argue to death why she has to watch Pokemon and not the newscast. My carbon-copy Jasmine has yet to learn to speak Tagalog. She can only speak our local dialect Bisaya and English. Though she can understand when someone talks to her in Tagalog, she would respond back in English. One time, I tried to persuade her teacher to teach her Tagalog but to my dismay, the teacher even encourage her to speak more English. I later realize that because of Jasmine, here classmates were forced to speak English.

Joshua would cry river just to get what he want and after handing him his demand, he would smile at you and wink. Perhaps Joshua is still to young to understand hence the tantrums he throws unto us. But whatever naughtiness she evokes, we always melt when he flick his tantalizing eyes and display his charming smiles.

Thanks God for giving me this precious gifts! My kids may be killing me but they are main reason why I am happy now.

The slave psyche

The famous "I have no major major problem..." answer of Venus Raj, the Philippine candidate to the recently concluded Miss Universe 2010, had been the subject of ridicule, parody, and praise. With my set of friends, we just make fun with it and laugh at the first hint of the word "major major". Sad to say, there is no one in the office who could share or discuss this matter with me. Arwin is not the typical guy who would engage in critical conversation and the rest of my colleague didn't care - they are Arabs.

Tonight, I heard TM Ron talked about this. Initially, we just laugh at it and then we progress by exchanging discourse on why Venus failed to snatch what every one expected to be hers. I cited that Yahoo banners "Answer cost a candidate a pageant" and the article clearly elaborated Venus lost the pageant. She was the judges favorite, the crowd's favorite and even the candidates' favorite. It was suppose to be her's but she fizzle at the last moment.

TM Ron had an interesting explanation on the situation. He shared that he once had similar situation where he also fumble. Hence he could at least approximate the feeling of Venus at that moment. Years ago, according to Ron, he was suppose to deliver his last campaign message for the position Region 10 Youth Leader President . Together with the rest of the candidates, they were invited in a prestigious 5-star hotel in Cagayan de Oro to speak before an audience of voters. For unknown reason, he said, he stammered and felt so small - he barely deliver a good message during his turn. He lost the position to a sweet-talking and confident speaker... to the dismay of the everyone because they felt, he was far better qualified as a leader.

Ron explained that the slave psyche conquered him that night. He felt like he was a slave who was invited in a banquet of rich people. He didn't feel worthy to stand in front of the voters because he came from poor family and he has humble beginnings. And that is what strike Venus at the final moment of the pageant. She was overwhelmed with the invitation to join the top 5 of the pageant... and she felt she didn't deserve it.

The words of TM Ron rings a bell in my mind. Even before going to bed, I still thought about it. How many times did the slave psyche conquered me? Gee there were many times... and those cost me the growth of my academic endeavor and in my career choices.

Mommy just smiled, kissed me and then said "That's alright, you have me anyway"!

PRTC Bowling 2010

PRTC Strikes Back!

What a catchy theme for our bowling invitational for the year 2010.

We just completed a fun filled and exciting bowling games at the King Faisal Recreational Center this afternoon. There were over 12 teams who joined which was double than our projected estimate of six. And there were almost a hundred people who joined us - some were bowlers and most were noisy cheering audience. Majority of the PRTC members where present including those inactive members.

Mommy came with me but was not able to play. She was still nursing from the abdominal pain she was suffering since Saturday.

Me? I played only two games. My body was already aching. Tsk tsk tsk.. I believe, I am already too fat.

We are ashamed!

Few hours ago my friend Danila, who is working in Hong Kong as a flight stewardess, confided that they were verbally abused some rowdy Hong Kongers. Having just arrived from a long haul trip from the US, she was surprised and didn't have any idea what was going on, so she ignored the men. Only when she reached her apartment and started listening to the radio did she realized what the guys were talking about. And she felt ashamed about it. Who wouldn't be? I am ashamed too.

In the Internet, rounds and rounds of nasty expletive were being exchange among our fellow Pinoys on whom to blame on the other day's bloodbath in Quirino Grandstand where 7 Hong Kongers died in a hostage drama. I am sad that most of us don't have the proper perspective and didn't comprehend the impact of the situation. Some were outright off with they remarks such as blaming the former president Gloria Macapagal Aroyo as the reason for this mistake; they asserted if GMA was not corrupt, then the policemen may have better equipment and training. There were very few who were level headed, they kept their comment pending investigation of the case.

Before hanging the phone, I told my good friend to keep her calm and avoid areas where Pinoys commonly gather. Gee.. I hope she's fine.

The Fat Angel

The theme of 's Toastmaster's meeting was "Angelic".

Last week, our VP for Education TM Reina Tejano had been sending emails reminding us to wear white and something angelic. When mommy heard about this, she was so excited and she planned to join the meeting as an angelic Toastmaster of the Evening. She cleaned up the old butterfly wings of my daughter Jasmine so she can wear it as her angelic wings. Well, she actually looks cute when we tried it onto her. And with me wearing a fitting black and blood red long sleeves, we certainly look like sexy Angel & fat Devil.

But our plan didn't materialized. Mommy got sick since Tuesday and leave me no choice but attend the meeting alone. Instead of wearing the devil's outfit, I thought of wearing the wings that mommy prepared. Well, it looks nice with me - so I thought - until one of my colleagues in Toastmasters gave a remarks. "Hey you look like that fat caterpillar in the movie Bug's Life - big and fat body with cute little wings". Arghh!!!!

"Hehehe... that was funny", I thought. With me laughing with them on how chubby and fat the angel of me, the meeting was a comical success.

You guess it! It was me as the comic relief

Mommy is sick

My wife was complaining about the pain in her tummy since Tuesday night. At first, we thought it was just gas spasm because - according to mommy - this was not the first time it happened. Back in the Philippines she said, she experienced the same pain and that was actually worse. So we tried to ignore the illness and we settled only liniment and a tablet of Antacid.

But the pain didn't go away. So this evening, I decided to bring her to the clinic to see her Filipina OB-GYNE Dr Rowena Zaplan at the Al-Haramain Clinic. After over three hours of checkup and long wait for laboratory analysis, Dr Rowena gave a diagnosis. The doctor told us that mommy had a severe infection in the fallopian tube and she has a 4cmx4cm cyst in the left ovary. The doctor suspects that there is something wrong with mommy's intestine and for that, mommy may have to undergo another round of clinical test.

We went home past 10pm. On the way, mommy told me that last year, she experienced a much severe pain in the stomach that forces to stay in the house for over a week. During that entire period, she could barely move and she lost a lot of weight.

Tsk tsk tsk... this is bad!

Durook and some long lost classmates

Fidel called up last night and informed that our high school classmate Frederick Baynosa Jr, commonly known as Durook, is here in Saudi Arabia. Fidel told me that Durook is in Najran and may need our help.

This morning, I immediately called him and ask for information on his status. I was surprise to hear that voice was a bit gloomy and there were traces of frustration and desperation with the way he talk. I wasted no time, I readily cheer him up and promised to extend help whenever possible. I think it works. After an hour in the phone, he was already positive and upbeat when we said good byes. He even told me that our classmates Mariano Mondragon and Joel Aguirre may be here in Saudi too.

With this new information, I tried to search the Internet for additional info about Mariano and Joel. Though I search for Mariano, I spend most of my afternoon looking for Joel. Honestly, I am still very interested with Joel because I have a beef to settle with him. Way back in 1998, Joel raped our adopted sister Winecyl. The case was dismissed because of the lousy handling of our attorney.

The day ended with no significant progress with my search.

That night, I told my wife about this. Mommy just smiled and kiss me on the check. "Be thankful and be happy. God gave you a good life and despite all the trials you had in your earlier days, you made it through and you had been successful."

For the first time in my life... I just realized how fortunate I am that God showered me with His blessings and protection.

Chartering New Clubs

For the past three weeks, I was deeply involved with the chartering of two new clubs for Area 1.

First, the FILCOM-IT Toastmasters club with TM Rod Ganzon & Marilyn Costuna. This club will be the source of good speakers for FILCOM-IT and will be my baby club to nurture. The second is The Gold Toastmasters club - an Arabic speaking club - with TM Hassan Maghazel. I will be the sponsor but may not attend the club meetings. Hassan will do all the necessary works after the chartering.

Paper works in chartering is indeed challenging. We completed all the documents last August 8 and submitted it that day. But the papers came back because of some procedural defects, hence we re-submitted the papers days later. Both clubs were officially charted in Toastmasters International only on August 20, 2010.

By the way, this was not the first clubs where I became the sponsor. Last July 21, a new club under Area 5 was chartered. This club was named the PSME-CRSA & Friends Toastmasters Club. Area 5 governor TM James Taruc was my co-sponsor and was responsible for all the paper works.

Hehehe... now, I have sponsored three new TM clubs in less than two months period.

FILCOM-IT Graduation

Before going to sleep, I made sure I finish writing the script of mommy for the FILCOM-IT Graduation. Indeed, that what I did and it was past 3am when I went to bed.

I had three schedules today: Give an introduction about Toastmasters with and then give an educational session with PSME between 1pm to 2pm, and then give a closing remarks at the FILCOM-IT Graduation ceremony at 5pm. Mommy on the other hand would be the master of ceremony for the graduation. A good schedule for both of today

When I arrived at the White Palace Hotel, I was advised by a PICE officer that they may not have a slot for me because of the tight schedule, hence we cancel the presentation. I immediately went down to the basement to attend the PSME meeting (at the same hotel). I was just in time because TM Reina failed to show up as Toastmaster of the Day. I readily filled up the role and then decided to skip the educational session to gave way for the new members. They will need more of Toastmasters Introduction than Educational Session.

At around 4pm, I immediately proceed to Al Taj International School to attend the Filcom-IT graduation. I saw my beautiful mommy at the stage taking control of the program.

We went home at round 7:30pm - tired, exhausted and sleepy.

Running Thursday

I woke up late this morning - 10 am. I saw mommy at the bathroom who now almost done dressing up. I know that we are late so I made a quick 5 minutes shower and wasted not more than 2 minutes to dress up. At 10:20am, we left the house for an appointment with our CFC house hold at Tita Arnel & Tita Marianne.

We went back home at 3pm and take a quick nap - with the kids - so we may have more energy for tonight's activity.

It was past 5pm when Mommy and I went out of the house. We paid a visit to Toast of Comsofil to observe the Area 1 official visit. As an appointed Asst Gov for Education and Training, I have to support TM Jay Mag, our Area Governor. I conducted an educational training using the Better Speaker Series manual - Beginning Your Speech.

After the meeting, we immediately proceed T2 Benjie to catch up the HLT seminar. We were late but was able to hear the talk #3 of Tita Yolly. The seminar ended at about 10:30pm. We went ahead of the group and proceed to Al Haram Center to buy stockings and belt for mommy. She will need it tomorrow.

It was already past 1am when we reach home. I was so tired, I failed to send some important documents to Toastmasters International. Gee... TM Jay would be angry with me about this.

Trip to Panorama Mall

The past few days had been lighter. Unlike last month where I barely have an hour to rest during weekends, this week was a breather. I went home early today - 4 pm.

Late in the evening, I took my family for grocery. We still have plenty of food in the cupboard and was only finding an excuse to the kids to the Mall. I thought, have never been to the grocery section of the Panorama Mall and this might be a good time to do visit. And should we found nothing in the grocery store, we can easily moved to the kidz' zone and enjoy kiddie rides and McDonalds. And indeed, we went to Panorama mall.

The grocery store was astonishingly well organized with lots of choices. Mommy even commented that she likes the place - something she doesn't do often. Except for the clumsy arrangement on the corners... the place is a superb destination for grocery.

Past 12 midnight, we proceed to the kidz' zone and treat our children for some rides and food. It was already past 2am when we went home.

Basic Manual.. take 2

My initial thought of repeating the Toastmasters Basic Manual was somewhere between ridiculous and laborious. If most Toastmasters takes at least 1 year to complete the basic manual - just like me, then why would I want to repeat the task? Well... frankly, I don't know!

Mon Austria started delivering speeches from the basic manual since June. At first I didn't get the gist of why he was doing that. Then lately I thought, this could be my chance to further refine my speaking skills and put color to what was a lackluster performance during my first time. So why not do it again!

Well, that is exactly what I did.

I delivered my Project #1 The Ice Breaker at the inaugural meeting of the Filcom-IT Toastmasters Club this afternoon. My audience were mostly neophytes in Toastmasters and they all paid me a handsome round of applause. Just short of standing ovation, hehehe!

Honestly, I did not prepare for that speech. I just winged it. All I did was talked like what I do in Table Topics and then expanded two main points: poverty and triumph. I was confident that I could deliver a good performance because the objective was very simple - to start speaking.

Hmm... I think, I have to do better next speech.

The Lady In Pink

Advance Manual: Special Occasion Speeches

Project # 3: The Roast

Title: The Lady in Pink

When I was younger, I always claim that my favorite color is blue until one day my sister pointed that it is not. If you've seen my room, everything in there is pink of a shade of it. And to capped it all, I married a lady whose nickname is Pinky.

Good evening fellow Toastmasters, and most especially to you madam pinky.

I first saw TM Pinky, eighteen years ago, in Cagayan de Oro. She was this young and feisty baranggay captain in the place where I just moved in. I thought, a beautiful lady like her deserves a handsome man like me, so I paid her a visit. On the night of the visit, she must really be excited. She looked at me from head to foot, shivered, and whispered "weww". And she was a very good host: she let me wait at the door forever before allowing me to come in. And before I could say a word, she said "I'm sorry I'm not ready for a relationship, I just had a broken heart". Dumbfounded, I politely replied "I have not yet started, we'll get into that". Gee… her eyebrows went berserk, I thought she would throw recycled cookies at me.

It was a night to remember, but what made it more memorable was here strange behavior. Before leaving, I ask her if we could have dinner… and she simple said "Yes" (shaking her head from left to right) or was it "No" (shaking her head up and down)?

Eventually, we have dinner the following day. I didn't talk about love, I was afraid she would readily say yes to me. I just keep on appreciating her beautiful face and nice hair. Perhaps she love to be appreciated, she beamed "are you a girl" which I readily replied "yes"… and she laugh loudly.

Six days later, I invited Pinky on a beach. Gee, she really loves listening to my stories I saw her humming with her earphones. And when I asked, "can I kiss you", she looks at me blankly and but she nodded. I immediately jumped and kissed her…. for thirty minutes. "What just happened" she asked afterwards. "You are now my girlfriend". "Hah? Oh.. bejesus".

Pinky is a sweet girlfriend. She puts more pink-of-happiness in our lives, most of it initiated by me. She made sure that we share the burden of life – me on the heavy end most of time. Like when we quarrel, we always settle it with me saying "Pinky, I am sorry… anyway it's your fault".

Oh, I almost forget. Pinky has a very loving and caring father. One time, we went out for movie date and went home late … just 10 pm actually. I saw her father and brother at the mall entrance with rolled up sleeves and they were carrying large sticks. By the way, Pinky was already 28 years old that time.

Finally, married life.

Pinky is a very caring wife. Here's the evidence: I gained weight significantly. She made sure that I finish everything she puts in the table – whether it taste good or not! Eventually, I cannot distinguish what is tasty food and what is not. It just food.

Pinky also love beautiful kids. When our daughter Jasmine came, I was really worried because she already promised that if the baby looks like me, she'll will shove it back. Luckily Jasmine looks like Pinky –back view. Then came our little boy Joshua. Alas a beautiful baby… just like the father. Pinky would then wink at me and tease… are you sure?

Eighteen years has passed, I really wonder why Pinky was so in love with me. But I have a hint. Pinky is a teacher who specializes on special children. I guess… I am special too… just like her pupils.

Back to you evening master

When I was the VP for Membership…

Few days ago, I just turned two years with Toastmasters. I could say, it's been a colorful and an eventful two years of my life. My home club, the PICPA Riyadh Toastmasters Club (PRTC), not only gave a good spring board to develop my communication skills, but more importantly the club gave me the opportunity to practice leadership skills. I have served as Sgt-at-Arms, VP for Membership, and just recently finish serving as President. Among the position I held in the club, I find the VP for Membership the most challenging.

The eager learner inside of me, help made the decision for me to run for VP Membership. Honestly, I felt I was not prepared to do the job. Deep inside of me I thought, I don't have experience how to perform the job. When asked the senior members and for tips, they simply replied: The primary function of the VP Membership are

  • Recruit New Members
  • Retain Active Members
  • Return Inactive Members

That was easy, I thought, but I realize later that in reality, these are quite "challenging" to achieve.

Let me share to you some of the tips and tricks that I've gathered when I was the VP for Membership.

Starting from Scratch: Recruit New Members

How do we recruit new members? To do that, you need to make a plan, a roadmap, a guide that will be your basis on recruiting new members.

1st: Set your Goals

As VP for membership, you need to understand that bringing in new members has a direct impact on the Distinguished Club Program (DCP) goals of your club. Bringing in four (4) new members allows you to receive 1 DCP point for the club. If you bring in an additional four (4) new members, you are entitled to received another 1 DCP point.

Set your goal to eight (8) new members in the club for a maximum 2 DCP points. How about bringing in more than 8 new members? Well, you may receive a thunderous applause from the club but not a DCP point (pun intended).

Now that you know the magic numbers : 4 new members + additional 4 new members! But how do we deliver the numbers?

2nd: Plan a Membership Building Program

You need to plan a membership building program. Some of the noted strategies are:

  • Have a contest to invite guest

In PRTC, we launch a promo "Bring-a-Friend, Win-an-IPod". The response was overwhelming that in the period of six months, we were able to invite 225 unique guests, 180 returning guests, and converted 22 new members. We admit, we have to work on our conversion rate with is just 9%, but 22 new member is 22 far greater than our target of 8. Agree?

  • Club Membership

If you are a member of an organization outside of Toastmasters, use your connection to invite and bring them in to Toastmasters meeting. I am an Electronics & Communication Engineer and a member of Association of Value Engineering; I brought in 12 engineers as guest and converted 1 as new member. I joined in an MBA Crash Course; I brought in 7 managers and converted 1 new members. As a badminton aficionado, I invited 5 guests and converted 3 as new members. As a professional photographer, I invited 1 guest and successfully converted him a new member.

The point here is that, you don't need to be a member of a formal club to invite guests. Your sports buddies, your friends, even your relatives can be a good source as guest in your club.

  • Public Relation

Without argument, the media – both print and TV is the most powerful tool to excite guest to visit our club. With close coordination with the VP-PR and through the help of our friends in the media, we posted our activities in local newspaper – Arab News and Saudi Gazette; and of course, in the local Filipino TV Channel. It was so successful, my friends starts asking me if I have plans of inviting them to our club. You too can do the same with your local newspaper and TV channel.

  • Special Meeting / Show Case

Have you ever attended a PRTC induction program? We also do a show case meeting during induction. Why? Because this is the best time to give our guest an idea how we conduct meetings in PRTC. Of course, we always "show case" our best speakers, best meeting masters, and best table topics speakers. The objective is to give a "wow" effect to the uninitiated.

We have conducted demo meeting in a restaurant, in a school, and function rooms. Meetings should not be confined in the four walls of your home club. Get out and explore.

3rd: Encourage Guest to Join

Now that you have successfully enticed your guest to visit your club, what shall you do? Obvious of course:

  • Greet them in friendly manner and pay attention to them. Never leave a guest "orphaned" in one corner
  • As much as possible, get to know each guest.
  • Get guest comments. However, be sensitive if the guests doesn't want to speak, lest you scare him/her off
  • Follow up your guest. Giving a call after the meeting is a good start.

4th: Complete Membership Application

You bring in a guest, managed to bring him again, and you convinced him/her to join the Toastmasters. Now, you have a new member. Is that enough? As VP Membership, it is your duty to guide and assist the new member on how to familiarize the environment and the culture in Toastmasters.

  • Fill up the membership application form with the member. This will give an impression that he/she is important to you and to the club. Make copies of the application: one for the club file and one for the member.
  • If the new member is ready, collect appropriate dues & taxes
  • Promptly update the TI website with the new application. If you still use snail mail, send it immediately.

5th: Formally Induct the New Member

And yes, make sure that you formally induct the new member. Who among you was not inducted properly? What would you feel if you are not inducted properly?

Keep the Fire Burning: Retain Active Member

In all the clubs that I have been in Riyadh, Singapore and Philippines, I have observed the club always exert most of its effort in bringing in new members. It is a common sight that members withers and fades away. We don't notice this because we got too engrossed with the new members hence neglect our existing members.

As VP for Membership, it is your duty to ensure that the active members stay in the club. Here are some tips on to pull this off.

1st: Keep in Tune with Member's Needs

Be attentive to all members in the club. Try this in your next meeting. I am sure, you will find at least one member who will opt to stay in the corner, avoid other members, or slip in/out of the meeting. These are the "ghost" members who may prefer not to be seen or heard.

Talk to them. If you can talk to a total stranger, there should be no problem for you talking to a familiar faces.

2nd: Establish a Membership Committee

Did you know that as an Executive Officer of the club, you are allowed to form a committee under your function? And another trivia, you're the only committee that is allowed to recruit more than 2 members? Yes! It is even possible to get all members in the club under your committee. Hah! That's what we called "huge" committee.

Remember your goals? Share it with your committee. Strategize with your member, and allow the member to get deeply involved. You'll be surprised how easy it is to be a VP for Membership

3rd: Perform your VP Membership Responsibilities

Although it is given that as VP for Membership, you are expected to perform your responsibilities, reality bites and we have to admit that some VP Membership may have neglected or forgotten his/her responsibilities.

Ask yourself: Have you…

  • Prepared an Annual/Semiannual Membership Report?
  • Attend Executive Committee meetings?
  • Attend and vote at Area Council meetings?
  • Promote the Distinguished Club (Club Excellence) Program?

Changes are, you have only accomplished one out of the four responsibilities.

Rekindle the Light: Return Inactive Members

1st: Keep in touch With Inactive Members

Convincing an inactive members to return is a serious job. You need tons of patience, wide avenue for understanding, a soft disarming voice, and more importantly you need to have good listening ear.

Here are some strategies that is worth trying:

  • Call or write them

Calling them personally is highly suggested. If the person cannot be reached, send him email. Use social networking sites such as Facebook or Friendster to get in touch with these people. Do not limit the effort of reaching the inactive members to yourself. Get everyone involved, especially those who personally knew the member.

  • Work with Membership Committee
  • Stress benefits of Toastmasters

You may not believe, stressing the benefit of Toastmasters still works.

2nd: Help Inactive Members Stay in Toastmasters

3rd: Find Them Other Clubs That Meet Their Need

Time, schedules, call of work, and other priorities are the main reasons why member become inactive. As VP Membership, try to understand the need of the member and find a way to insert Toastmaster in that mesh. As last resort, find another club for the inactive member that may address or meet his/her need.
