scrooge

Tonight, I was watching cable TV when I bump onto a cartoon channel showing the classic Charles Dickens's Ghost of Christmas. I know the story and have seen hundreds of interpretation and heard it over and over I couldn't count how many. Just a slight hint and I could easily identify the story, and by instinct I would automatically moved to something else... just to avoid it. But not tonight! For some reason, I watch the show, and you know what? It stuck into my heart! Ayouhh!!!

I started thinking, what have I become after all these years? I haven't celebrated real Christmas for the past six years, been away with my family and love ones, was alone for quite sometime, and worse, I was cutting off my "line" with my Maker. I've stopped creating real friends and stop talking to my old friends, too. Gee... I am becoming a Scrooge!!!

I remember when I was young, I was hyperactive organizing Christmas activities in our community, lead a bunch of teenagers on charity works, and spend a lot of my time in the church. Even after these years, I could still remember how happy I was and was never tired because of too much excitement and adrenaline rush. More importantly, I have lots of real friends and we were "closer" to our Maker. But that was my Christmas past!

Now, I am "celebrating" Christmas alone. I didn't bother decorating my house and never thought of packing Christmas gifts. I thought, I don't have visitors anyway and don't have anyone to worry for gifts. Hus! I am getting callous! Is this my Christmas present?

I don't need the spirit of Christmas to show me my Christmas future! I got the message and I felt it! I know it's no coincidence that I watch that ole TV show! My Maker is calling me and he wants me back!

an inspiring night with Kitche Nadal

When I first came back to the Philippines, the first song I've heard at the airport was a Pinoy song with lyrics that touches something in my heart! I just ignored it, thinking I was just bitten by the Balikbayan bug (too much fascination with anything pinoy!) and this song could just be one of the current fad in the country. Yet the melody lingers on my memory and for everyday that I've been hearing the song, I just realize that I was already singing "Oh... wag na wag mong sasabihin"

Gee... that's not me!!! I'm ashamed of myself.

After a little effort, I learned that the song was written and performed by Kitchie Nadal. The song became a mega hit in the Philippines when it became a theme song of a famous Korean tele-novela Lovers in Paris. I was not spared of the charisma of Kitchie. I bought her CD before going back to Japan.

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Two years had passed, the song may no longer be famous in the Philippines but for me, I still listen to it at least once a week. I made no secret that it is my favorite song and my photo buddies knows it. They even teased me about it!

And today, I got a gift that I've never wish and dream to happen. Kitchie01
I got a chance to see Kitchie Nadal sang my fav song - up close and personal.

Kitchie was in Singapore for a stop over. She'll be flying to India for a concert and will be performing to other parts of the world afterwards. Tonight, she gave a mini show to a small group of Christian Singaporean-Pinoy at Three Riffles Bldg. And I, together with my photonski buddies, was fortunate to be invited - courtesy of Arjie.

Listening to Kitchie Nadal singing was bewitching. I am an certified addict with photography but with Kitchie, I almost forgot that I went there to take pictures. Hus, had it not been with my buddies who reminded me to use my camera, I could end up just listening and no pictures taken.

It's funny to think that I was behaving like an "adolescent in love", with a heart fully inspired and a smile that touches the ears. My buddies could see it and they've been teasing me brutally. But I don't care. I was happy and was enjoying the night. That was the most important thing!

slow afternoon

I wake up late today. I stayed in the house the whole morning watching DVD and did nothing literally. I was too lazy to prepare for breakfast and was not in the condition to do household chores. I just lay on the sofa and relax myself. I believe, my body was trying to recupiate for
having streched myself too much at the gym last week.

After sleeping for 12 hours, I got bored staying at home. I decided to go out to breath some fresh air and catch some action in the city. I've heared, there's a lot of ongoing activities at the Orchard, Suntec, and Raffles. Bedok01Just one good reason to flash my tora-tora and take some photos.

While returning books at Bedok Community Library, I saw some bunch of Ang-Mo kids playing in-line skates at the nearby park. Hmm..kids in Action.

I though this would be a good subject to shoot, so I hastily get my camera out of my backpack and started to find a good spot. But when I look back a the kids, they stop playing when they noticed that I was taking pictures at them. They were camera shy. Well, I respected their decision of privacy so I quietly move away. I was able to capture few good shots though.

opportunities

Last week, I received a call asking me to update my CV in the jobstreet website. I ignored the call thinking this may just be a phishing scam or just some prankster who wanted to have some good time. But this morning, I got another call and the person on the other line sounds serious. He introduced himself as a headhunter for a large multi-national company and was asking if I could come to their office for an opportunity discussion. I don't know what comes into my mind but I said yes. Not only did I agree to visit them, I set it today in the afternoon. I was confident I could go back to the office in time because their place was across the next tower.

The interview was fine. We didn't talk much on my technology knowledge but he rather opted to explored more on my management skills and project management experience. He mentioned about several opportunities in the team - 5 actually - and emphasizes on the need for a team leader. I was cautious not to sound too confident and too cocky with my answered. I have to make sure that I don't send a wrong signal. Honestly, I am interested with the position and I was hoping that he would offer it to me. Before we parted, he said that he may ask med to come back for a final interview with his boss.

On the way home, I was still thinking of the opportunity that was just opened to me when I received an unregistered call. I readily answered the phone thinking it was a call from our Support in the US. But I was surprised when the caller introduced himself as CA recruiter for London. Huh! Why would a headhunter from UK call me? I was expecting a call from John of Australia, Winnie from China, and Piyush from the US because I have several issues that needs resolution - and not from UK! Tsk tsk tsk.

Nevertheless, I talked to the guy and we discuss on the opportunity of moving to the Manchester City. He was particularly interested with my implementation skill and architecture experience with Unicenter and eTrust. If I would accept the offer, he would facilitate my transfer from Singapore to UK and would take care of my accommodation. Gee... this one was really good! Huh!

Ah! bahala na si batman! Basta, pray na lang ako ang let Him decide where should I go next.

another opportunity

Blessings!!!!

Ten AM. I was awaken by a call from a head hunter. The call came from Jhun, my headhunter here in Singapore. He informed of an opportunity to work with a bank as Team Lead in Network. The offer was permanent, $72k p.a., plus CPF contribution, and will be based in Tampines. Hmm... this is nice! I guess, this could be blessing that I've been waiting for. I said yes, and then went back to sleep. I'm still tired from last night's long duty.

I wish, God will bless me a more stable job where I could consider staying until my retirement.

christmas, in the old days

When I was still a child, I really thought that Christmas starts when the calendar month ends with 'ber'. That could be as early as September, which in reality still to far from December. But for a young boy growing up in a far flung remote village of Central Mindanao, the thought of Christmas brings unusual excitement and joy. It means good food - that only comes ones a year - like smoked ham, crispy pata, special adobo (with quail eggs), cases of bottled coca cola, and lots and lots of grapes and apples. Gee, the mere thought of it was an ecstasy!

Do you know what I like most with Christmas? It was the excitement of making a Belen, stars and lanterns. I used to compete with my neighbor by boasting the best lanterns hanging on our window. My father thought me how to create small doves, balls-of-fire, and falling stars out of bamboo sticks and Japanese papers. With little ingenuity and lots of patience, we could light our lanterns by hiding small candles inside it. Hehehe... there was a time I almost burn our house because my lantern catches fire. Then at night, me and my father would sit on a hammock and watch the stars in the bright evening sky and wait for occasional falling stars.

Christmas was just simple but full of life and excitement. We don't have electricity and we don't know what Christmas lights are and we didn't know that we can buy cheap lanterns and stars from local shopping malls. But we were very happy.

Things had changed! Now I am old, I don't see lanterns anymore. Almost everyone hang Christmas lights and adore there homes with Christmas tree. Gone are the Belens and the old fashion stars. Much more here in Singapore! Xmas01You don't see or feel Christmas until you go to Orchard. There, you could hear Christmas songs played on shopping malls, see giant Christmas trees displayed on mall facade, or watch millions of Christmas lights littering almost every corner of the street.

Tonight, I went to Orchard to see how it looks like at night.

While walking along Wisma Atria, I saw this little Christmas decors hanging on tress. It amuses me because it reminds me of my little doves and balls-of-fire. They are shiny, come with different colors, and glitters because of the tiny little lights inside or beside it. They are beautiful and come in thousand. Whew, if my father was still alive, he would surely share the happiness that I felt tonight.

As the sun started to disappear in the horizon, millions of tiny little lights started to illuminate the Orchard road. They are like stars that were taken from the sky and were attached to strings and tied together. They are beautiful to look at... but they are too common that it just doesn't give me the Xmas04Christmas spirit anymore. Whew, I miss those times that I have to watch the heaven to see stars.

ronnie

Just like may daily routine, I went down to the basement kopitiam (foodcourt) of Suntec City to get a quick lunch. I still have two meeting in the afternoon and I am running short of time. I'm sure, I'll gonna be late but I don't mind. I would rather be late with full stomach than be on time but could not concentrate because I am hungry.

As I enter the shop, someone called my name and got my attention. When I turn back, I saw this chubby Pinoy who called me by my name and flash me with a big wide smile. I smiled back but was halfhearted because I really cannot remember the guy. Then he shake my hands and told me his name is Ronnie. Awkward may it seems, I really tried to ask him how we got to know each other. He just give me a little push on my shoulder and replied "CyberJ - 77 Global".

Hehehehe... that was nice! I forgot Ronnie!

Ronnie was my office mate in the 77 Global Resources and was the WebSphere Administrator support for Prudential US. He sat just infront of my cubicle, and oftentimes when work is slack I used to exchange jokes and stories with him and his partner Chris. I learned that he is now working here in Singapore and currently assigned at Citibank.

Huh! I feel ashamed of myself. My memories is no longer cooperating with me.

fever

Did you know that getting sick is the hardest part when you are living alone? I learned it the hard way. I have a fever since last night and this morning, I tried to wake early but my body wouldn't agree. Chill still shivers in my loins and joints, and my head was aching. I need to get some hydro salts to avoid dehydration. My diarrhea had worsen and I've already taken 15 trips to the toilet since 2pm yesterday. Huh! I really need to see a doctor today!

I was supposed to attend the Photonski meeting today at Three Riffles Building. Together with other officers of photonski, I was part of the committee that will do the selection of entries for the upcoming Photo Exhibit this year. But with fever and muscle pains all over my body, I don't think I can make it. I called up Arjie and told him that I cannot make it.

I stayed in the house the whole day. I took some medicine and sleep.

goodby manong max

In my lifetime, there is only one Filipino that I admire most and he was no other than the prolific Max Soliven.

Since 1986, it has been my morning habit to pick up a Philippine Star newspaper - my choice of paper - to get the latest news of the day. But instead of reading the headline, I would dig in into the Opinion section for my favorite column "By the Way" of Max Soliven. And when the online version became available, reading his column was never been easy. From that time on, I never stop reading his works.

Reading the column was much better than the headlines because it was informative and the column was laden with "inside" information, comparative analysis, and most of the time "right-from-the-horse-mouth" info. Max offers a wide perspective of what's happening to his beloved Philippines and would oftentimes give realistic advice to our narrow minded politicians. He was never afraid to voice out his opinion to anyone including our Philippine President, and he even write kilometric column about political leaders of the world. You could easily sense his authority and knowledge of what he was writing, having been in the industry for over half a century and having had first hand experience and of the situation. Max was the icon of Philippine journalism.

Just like my regular day, I surf the net and open up the Philippine Star website and immediately browse the column written by Max. He wrote about the rising Japan and its move to amend its constitution. It was an open ended column, as usual, and I was expecting that by Saturday he would give a more detailed update. But I was wrong, there will never be no update to come. Max, my favorite writer pass away at 11:45am today.

To manong Max, the great saloyot, I will miss you very very much. Enjoy in the presence of our Maker.

California Fitness

Tired of being the object of joy because I have very large belly, I decided to go to gym. I enrolled at the California Fitness Gym at Bugis for $59 per month for one year. I didn't get a personal trainer because it was too expensive - $72 per week. Besides, I been to a gym before when I was still at the Middle East. I can still use my old routines and program.

Today is my first day! Whew! I enjoyed it very much. Not only the facilities were superb, but oh boy, the sight was very nice. Beautiful sexy bodies litter around. I am sure, I'll gonna enjoy it here!

Motorshow

I know that there the 2006 motorshow at the Suntec Convention Center - I posted it in the Photonski Forum. But with the $10 entrance fee, I didn't thought of going there. I was trying to save some "loose coins"... hehehee... to save for new lens! har har har.

And this morning after our street photography, Charlotte inquired if we were interested to watch the Motorshow. I immediately refused citing the entrance fee. Mac said he was going since he got nothing to do in the house today because Ned is on duty. Tolitz, on the other hand, together with other guys gave an alibi of previous commitments hence they're not going. And me? hmm... I was supposed to go home to do household chores, but Mac enticed me to join them by saying there would be a lot of Motor Babes in there. Charlotte added that it would a nice subject to shoot! Huh! addict talaga! I changed my mind, I went to the show.

We arrived at Suntec at around 11:10am. At the entrance, I got lucky I was able to got hold of the last give away goodies from the sponsor. I got a bag with a Subaru t-shirt and a bottle premium coffee. Well, not bad for the $10 entrace. Some of the Photonski guys - Alain and Henry - came early and were already there. We didn't waste time. We immediately immerse ourselves to the wide and spacious display halls of the Suntec Convention Center. Moto07

Wow beautiful cars! Yes, the beautiful and very expensive cars dominated the show.
I even spend over thirty minutes just watching the red shining Ferraris, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis. Gee, they're so beautiful that they need no human models just to attract the audience. Not contented of just watching, I really went inside the display area and touched some of the cars. And when the audience saw me, they got envious and also followed and touched the cars too. One gutsy guy even managed to sneak inside the car. It didn't take a minute before the coordinators showed up and politely asked everyone to step down the ramp. Hehehe... at least, I've touched it.

There were plenty of cars on display and they all look nice. But honestly, I could not appreciate them that much maybe because I don't have an affinity with cars, or perhaps because I Moto12don't drive a car here in Singapore. That's not important anyway. I came to the show not for the car but to shoot some Motor Babes.

And shoot, I did! Not just take a picture but also requested the model to pose with me, while my buddies took the picture! Hehehe... It was a case of beauty and the beast portraiture.

Ashamed? Nah, that's not part of my vocabulary. I have plenty of guts and my self esteem is so high I could
take an ocean of ridicules. Besides, I have my ways. I can sweet talk with the models and could keep them off guard. They feel so comfortable with me that they would allow me to touch them... and they even embrace me. Tsk tsk tsk... they might be thinking I am a "cuddly" papa bear. I am always careful though. I always make sure not to step any boundaries least I would loose their trust. I made it a habit that I ask permission before I do any physical touch - and 9 of 10, they would allow. Better be careful than sorry, right?

And my buddies? Hah! Mamatay sila sa inggit! wehehehehe.

Some of the motor babes were familiar. Abby Cruz was there and was posing for Lexus cars. Abby - the Bb Pilipinas runner up - was the model whom I shoot several months ago at Sentosa. Most of the Nissan babes were my models for pin-ups and portraiture. When the models saw us, they literally left their places and came to us. We exchanged chit chats and had some pleasantries. Hehehe... they really know us. We don't have to ask them to pose. They know what to do the moment we lift our cameras and point it towards them.

While my buddies were taking pictures of the models, I was just standing on one side watching Moto01
them from the reflection on the nearby huge mirror. Then suddenly an idea pop up. Why not take a picture of the model from the mirror? When I point my camera towards the mirror, I unwittingly took the picture of the model and also of my self. Amused with the result, I asked one of the models to pose for me but facing the mirror. Wary of the many people passing by, I waited for the moment where nobody was on my back then click the trigger. (Actually, there's one that is partially hidden).

Walla! The result was fantastic: Taking photo of a model and at the same time capturing myself in it.

Oh, I love my hobby!

macro

I know that you've seen hundreds of pictures of butterflies, grasshoppers, or dragonflies. You've seen it in posters, calenders and even greeting cards. But have ever tried taking pictures of these little creatures?

That is my friend, is called macro photography.

Honestly, I have never done any serious macro photography before. And the closest that i've got was taking close up pictures of orchid flowers using my ole' and ever reliable Olympus C730UZ. That was not real macro photography, though, not even close to "good" close up photography. So consider me zero in this field.

Well, I am not alone. Most of the photonski gang may be good with Portrait, Events and Fashion photography but you can only count with one hand the members who are true blue macro photographers. Infact, there are only three whom I know: the original Edcel who has moved to Australia, Rey - the current master, and Leo - the talended padawan (already a master). In the current active members, I only knew one who is serious with this field and that is Blenda.

You may ask, why is it that there so few who are into Macro? I don't know!!! Come to think Rey's gallery has the second highest hit at all time in the photonski website. That might be fantastic, isn't it? Well, see for yourself and be amazed. Visit the photonski website and search for Stingrey or butterflies. Be mesmerized.

Today, we got a chance to participate on one of the outreach activities of photonski. We called it Photonski Clinic: Macro Photography with Rey and Leo. Our location: Singapore Botanic Gardens and we have to meet at 7:30am. I was late. I came at around 8:30 because I didn't wake up early. Eh kase, napuyat kagabi at Insomia with the other Photonski members. I may have missed the lectures but didn't worry because during the actual hands-on shooting, Leo was on my side and demonstrate to us how to do it correctly. He also gave us valuable tips and techniques that he learned from years of experience. Frankly speaking, 70% of my shots were guided or set by Leo. If I have to do it alone, I could never get any descent shot.

Oh, time pass by so quick. We didn't realized that it was high noon and the sun was already burning our skin, because we enjoy the actual hands-on very much. We wrapped up for few minutes and then called it a day.

My take? hehehe.... here's a sample. I called it "Putol" - a picture of a one-legged-hopper who is laying eggs. More pics are found in my website:

new face 2006 & dirty dancing

I went home early today, 2pm to be exact, but instead of being happy I was actually sad. Our client failed to comply our requirements and now, the project will be delayed. For normal project, delays are inevitable and should be okay. But this one is not. It's irritating to think that I cancelled my scheduled vacation (upon the request of the customer) just to rush this project... only to realize that they are not ready. Grrrr!!!!! (lightning and thunders!!!!)

Frustrated with my work, I shelve my laptop and decided not to open it the rest of the week. I would rather pick up my camera and enjoy with my hobby.

* * * * * * * * *

I went to Takashimaya at around 7pm. New_face01_2
I learned from the Photonski forum about
the talent/beauty search for
The New Paper's New Face 2006 - and tonight will be the final show. Some photonski guys were already there when I arrived. But like me, they were not lucky to get a nearer spot. No choice, we positioned ourselves at the far end. That was okay with me. At least, I could test the efficiency of my new tora-tora under low light condition and at long range.

I got good shots and was enough for wide angle picture. But for close up shots with the contestants, the range was just simply too far. Later in the show, we decided moved to the side and tried to salvage any available space among the Clubsnap photographers. We managed to get two space, though.

If New_face03 you ask me how was the competition? I would simply aswer... the production was great. I couldn't say the same with the contestant except perhaps for two or three. Well, we all know that the locals have great skin, complexion, and body... but not the face. Oh, I am not saying that they are not pretty - they are!!! It's just that they are not my typical pretty face the way I expect in national competitions in the Philippines.

Beauty, anyway, is in the eye of the beholder.

I have posted some photos in my gallery. You may like to visit my site at:

http://www.photonski.com/sons_of_jorge/NewFace2006

We did not finish the show - we left after two catwalks. And with Che and Helyzer, we proceed to Splanade to meet fellow photonski buddies - Tolitz, Tonski and Arjie. We had dinner there! Later, Jared joined us. Melvin also drop by but didn't stay.

It's really nice to be with group. We had fun talking just anything under the moon, and we had fun watching people around us. I was particularly interested with the sexy ladies who were strutting around with skimpy skirt and blouse. They were dancers from a nearby Salsa Dance promotion outfit.

And you know what? I asked the girls to pose for me (kapal ko talaga) and they did! Danz01The catch? I have to dance salsa with them at the makeshift dancefloor. Ayun, napasubo!

I grind my fat ugly body with this tall caucasian lady (not in the pic) and the lady in the right (see pic). I didn't care if I don't know how to dance. Anyway, there were others who were in the same predicament. What's more important was the chance for me to go dancing with these pretty ladies. Hehehe.. I could make "tsansing" (advances) during body turns. hehehehe. tsarapp!!!

f4 or f2.8?

I'll bet, you did not get the gist of today's blog title. And if you do, then i'm sure you're into photography.

Yep, I was talking about a lens and not only an ordinary lens but a very good and quality "L" lens. For the past three months now, i've been pondering of buying a Canon 70-200 f4 lens but never had the drive to actually get one. It's a good lens, the review shows, but some photographers say that it is rather short when low lights prevails. My other friends recommend a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS, which arguably the best long lens around, but with a tag price of Singapore $3.2k, hah! i'll think a thousand times. Then last month, there was an announcement that there is a coming Canon 70-200 f4 IS version. They claim that it is almost as good as the f2.8 (without the IS version) and is $1k lower than the f2.8 IS. There's just one problem... it will be available on November.

Honestly, I frequently visit many camera shops these past few weeks. I was scouting for the least price and the best bargain for warranty. They can all give low price - if you know how to haggle - but when payment scheme comes into picture, they differ drastically. Cathay photo shop gave me an offer I could hardly resist: $2.8k for 12 months interest free and tax free.

So what to do, lah? Buy... ayahhh!!!!

Now, I have a new baby. A beatiful Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM.

CLS Workshop

Another busy weekend hit my schedule today.

This morning, I attended an outreach program of Photonski that was organized by Melvin and Jared. The theme of the activity was Creative Lighting System and macro photography. Actually, this activity was at first intended for Nikon user but was later opened to all other camera users. Most of the attendee were Nikon users, with 1 Olympus user. There were only four Canon users but with the proper setup and configuration of the flash, we were also able to achieve the Nikon's CLS setup.

Prior to the actual shoot, Melvin Vivas conducted an hour long lecture. He was good, mind you, and was able to clearly explain the purpose of CLS. Aside from Melvin, some advance photographers also shared their expertice and gave tips.

After the lecture, we were given an hour to setup and shoot. It was fun and very educational. Frankly, I learned a lot today. Then, Melvin choose some shoot and conducted Critique and Comments.

It was another successful outreach program. We learned new things and also meet some new photonski members.

Cls1

1200mm

Ever wonder that number stands for?

That's the longest commercial lens that any photographer can buy. And if you can afford the staggering price of over US$90k,Canonef1200mm you have to wait at least 2 months before the item will be
delivered at your doorstep. Now, assuming you have the lens. You don't carry it with your camera and dongle it on your neck. That would be dangerous. A 16.5kgs lens may break your neck. The lens comes with a heavy duty tripod to support it weight and to preclude shake. Image Stabilizer (IS) is not yet available for this lens, and I doubt if it ever will.

In reality, there are only around a dozen of it in existence and mostly found in the US & Europe. Sports Illustrated got two and the billionare founder of Oakley has at least one, and of course the Canon Professional Services which they used for promotions. For some big time paparazzi, this is the ideal lens for stalking high profile celebrities.

There only two known in existence in Asia. And now, for the launching of 400D in Singapore, Canon showcase this extreme lens. The good thing is... the public can take a hands-on test and experience the power of the 1200mm lens.

Well, it's obvious that I was one of those who got lucky to hold it.Mkii1200_a But I barely enjoyed testing it. I only have a minute and I don't have any subject that I can shoot. What can you shoot inside the booth? Nah.. nothing really. So what I did? I turn around the lens and position it to the street. I took a picture of some pedestrians who were over 500 meters away. Gee... I was amazed how far the lens can "see". If I attached a 2x extension tube, whoah, I could take a portrait of a person that is 1 km away.

Here's a sample of my test shots.

Oh take note... the people were very far from me such that my naked eye can't clearly see their face. Imagine extending your hand and comparing your finger nails with the size of their head - the nails are much bigger.

If I have US$90k... I will not buy this lens. hehehehe...

Big Bike Fest

I was never a fan with motorcycles, much less big bikes. Yes, I could ride a single motorcycle but the last time I did that was sixteen years ago. How could I forgot? I still got the scar on my right elbow to remind me how I got so lucky and escape with my life. Huh! scary and still nerve chilling everytime I recall how I flew 15 feet ahead of my bike and landed with my arched arms and roll over perfectly. It's still amaze me when I think of how I did that. Oh! did I tell you that I was a champion taekwondo fighter in my younger years? hehehhee!

Anyway, back to bikes. I saw a post in the Photonski thread informing the team that there will be a Big Bike Festival at Clark Quay. It didn't get my attention at first, but when the succeeding posts in the thread mentioned about the Biker Babes competition, hah, that fired up my energies. This must be interesting, I thought. So I went there and check it out myself.

Well, the bikes were indeed big and beautiful. They came in different style, shape color, and sizes. Honestly, I couldn't appreciate the difference because for me, all of them were fantastic. A pretty girl - one of the crew - tried to explain the Ducati bike that I was looking at, and at the same time tried to sell me some tickets and bike accessories. Hehehe.. nice try but I didn't bite the bait. Instead, I ask them to pose with the bikes.

And the Biker Babe contest? Nah, it's not worth mentioning. Bike00Just like what I had suspected, it was a waste time.
Or maybe... they're just not my type. Like food. We pinoys like adobo while the locals here like laksa. I think, I have to adjust my expectations and criteria with what a local Singaporean thinks and see. I'll work on it.

I almost forgot to mention, there was a Harley Davidson Fashion show performed by prefessional caucasian models. Hehehe.. when the contestants stood beside these pretty models, what a sight!

If you like to see big bikes, i've posted some pictures in my site. Just don't expect any babes in there because there's none!

Work at Home

Yes, just like what i've written in the title of my blog today, I am at home, working.

You may think it's nice to stay home so you can enjoy the comfort of your living room, can watch TV while working, or sleep if you feel like sleeping, and more importantly no nosy boss around.. gee I tell you, it's not!

I still like my soft reclining chair in the office, the nice aircon, and fewer assignment. It's ironic that now I am working at home, I got more work to do. Just like today, I spent my whole day at OCBC trying to troubleshoot a customer's issue. If only I have a choice, I would skip this one. The cases were difficult, support was slow to provide help, and t'was too cold at the server room. The only consolation I got from this client (and the reason why I keep coming back here.. hehehehe) was the pretty smile of my contact person. She's pretty and smells good! Waaaah!! Oi, don't get me wrong. I am now a reformed man [lightning and thunders!!!!!]

You may ask why am I working at home? Hmm... I just like it. Hehhehe.. Kidding aside, there is an ongoing international event at the Suntec City - the IMF Worldbank meeting - and will run from Sep 10 to Sep 21. During these eleven days event, security in the area will be very strict and some roads will not be accessible. To preclude inconvenience among employees, most companies at Suntec opted work-at-home scheme. And we're one of them.

So, I am here at home... working (kaya?). hahahaha!

Photonski Photographers

If you were reading my blog entries for the past few months, I would not wonder if you ask... "who are the photonski?"

Well, photonski was started five or four years ago by a group of photographers who came to Singapore for work. They were not professional photographers, but IT or career professionals who had this common burning passion with photography. From once a small informal gathering of friends, the group expanded and welcome other members - with only one qualification: Pinoy with passion for photography. Eventually, they establish a web site so they can have a common place to exhibit their work. I am not sure with my statistics, currently there are at least 30 very active members, and several dozens of lurkers. The biggest gathering of Pinoy shutterbugs in the island nation.

Photonski, like Singapore, is full of diverse and creative photo enthusiast. And like Singapore, they are unique and full of excitement. We may not agree all the time, may hurt each other's feeling in the pursuit of excellence, but we have one thing that all us agree... passion and happiness with photography. We are all certified "camera addicts"

If you like to see the faces of the photonski... take a visit at

A Colorful Sunday

I over slept

I forgot that besides the Swarovski show at 3pm this afternoon, I still have to go to CentrePoint to see another fashion show at 1pm. And now, I woke up at around 11:30? Hah! I don't think I have enough time to prepare for lunch, prepare my gear, and for the travel. I takes at least 30 minutes of MRT travel time from Bedok to Somerset, and plus a 5 minutes bus from my flat to the interchange, tsk tsk tsk... I doubt if I ever could make it there on time. I thought of skipping the show abut I changed my mind along the way. I reached Somerset at around 1:10, and thought that I can still catch the last portion of the show. Well indeed, I made it.

But you know what? I didn't shoot. Why? hmm.. I've seen the show last week. The models were the same and the dress were the same. I just stayed at the corner and watch.

As usual, Jared and Melvin were there. They brought with them their visiting friend Archie whom I observed was fascinated with the city's glitz and activities. As I was talking to Archie, I heard Jared said some bad comments, in Pinoy language, against some Clubsnap photographers who were few meters away. I simply ignore it knowing Jared doesn't mean bad. But one tsekwa secretly came near me and said... "your friend ah..", then pout his lips towards Jared and shake his head. He gave me a silly grin and then went away. I was surprised with that and wanted to discuss it with Jared and Melvin, but held my horses just to preclude any trouble.

I went ahead of them to meet somebody at the Lucky Plaza. Then after that, I proceed to Raffles City Mall for the Swarovski show. Well, I was true with my promise. I was 45 minutes early.. and.. hehehe.. got a very nice spot in the front row. The result of course, was better shots.

On my way home, I saw Bhong and Glenn at the train. With no topic to talk about, I opened up the incident at the CentrePoint. Glenn smiled and told me about the heated exchange of comments at the ClubSnap Forum. Huh! That explains it. My photobuddy had pickup a little disagreement with the locals. I think, as a friend, I have to "moderate" him to slow down.

When I reach home, I immediately opened up the thread. Waah!! the topic was really chilly-hot, and the sad part... I saw my picture in there! Huh! this is bad. Really really bad.

Swa01Before I sleep, I'll share one pic that i've taken from the Swarovski show this afternoon. This may not be one of my best pictures, but this one is out-of-the-box. No editing, not enhancement, just basic photography. There is where my satisfaction is.

Swarovski

The fire is back!

It really helps to confide with fellow photograhers. They may not agree with you all the time, but at least they were there when you needed them the most. Now, the virus is active again. I am alive, kicking and excited to road test my camera.

At around 2pm, I went to Raffles City Mall to watch the Swarovski Show - a fahion show for jewelries. I may have arrived just in time when the show started but the problem was, I didn't have a good angle to shoot. The front rows and the sweet spots of the catwalk were all taken by the Clubsnap photographers who were came as early as 1 hour before the show. I tried to squeeze in but with only a 17-85mm medium zoom lens mounted on my camera, I could not get a shot without getting obstruction along my line of sight. Gee.. all the tsekwa on my side were using at least a 70-200mm telezoom lens. So no choice, I have to find a better spot. Luckily, I found one niche between the banner poles. To my surprise, Jared and Melvin were also situated nearby. We exchange few chit chats then concentrate back to business.

The show was good, the models were professionals, and the pacing of the show was photographer friendly. Meaning, we all have enough time to take pictures between poses and struts. The only complain I have was... I didn't got a good angle of view. Tsk tsk tsk... I will come back tomorrow.

After the show, I look around and saw the other photonski guys. They waived their hands to recognize our presence but they didn't come to our place. Unusual, I thought, but I let it pass. Anyway, I was busy testing the new camera of Melvin, and was also having a conversation with Archie - a Philippine based photographer who is visiting the city. Archie looks very familiar and I had a feeling that I have met him several years ago while I was working at Philcom.

We parted ways as they were going to Marina while I was going the opposite - to Orchard. On the train, I catch up with Bong and Glenn who were also going to Lucky Plaza. I brought up the topic of the workshop to see their view. Bong agrees with me that Manny could have done better if he didn't shoot and should have given the participants tips and ideas on what to see or observe. Glenn on the other hand was modest with his comment. He said that he learned techniques on lighting and discovered the secrets of Manny's photos. But on the latter end, he also gave comment that Manny may be a good photographer but he was not an effective teacher. Bingo! That makes four of us. heheheh... I was right all along.

I went home happy and relieve. Sus, I have wasted time and energy whining on some trivia things. From now on... back to photography.

Oh... yeah, I almost forgot, the Swarovski fashion show. Where am I? Ah, the show. Well, it was good and the models were pretty. I got some good shots but I am half hearted to show it to you now. I'll be back tomorrow and will come early to get a good spot. Promise, I'll post some pictures.

Purist

I receive a call today. When I answered the phone, the guy on the other line introduced himself as an immigration officer. I was quite surprised as I was not expecting any call from anybody, least the ICA. So I played along and ask why and what he needed. As the conversation goes on, I've detected a Filipino accent which made me suspicious that it was a frank call. Indeed, it was.

Francis, my fellow photonski photographer, called up and told me that he read my blog and learned of my frustration with the Librodo workshop. He concurred to my finding and also shared his "frustration". Now, I felt relieved. All the while I was thinking that I was wrong, but with Francis telling me the same findings, I got a fresh breath of air. Franz was laughing as I was whining for over an hour, and gently he console me that it was okay. He assured me that I was doing it right - the correct way to be a master photographer - and that is to achieve mastery of my pictures from out-of-the-box. Meaning, excellent technical and superb composition as what the the camera has captured and not relying on Photoshop.

An hour later, I also got a call from another photonski photographer from Tolitz. This time, he called not because of the workshop issue but because he was trying to arrange a meeting with me (he wants to return the lens that he tested). We already talked about the workshop last Monday and he agrees with me. He told me that I would easily fit to the category of "purist" photographers. I just smiled with his remarks and said that I like it. His parting words were soothing to my ears... he alwasy reminded me to go where I am happiest the most. And for me, I think I would prefer shooting than photoshop.

I felt good today. Just like what I've hope for, I did find an answer to my dilemma. I got it from Franz and Tolitz.

Leave Ur Self Behind

I went out of the house quite late today. I could have stayed the whole day only if I got a Sinigang mix, but I run out of stock. At around 3pm, I've decided to go to Lucky Plaza to buy some Pinoy food and and the same time follow up my Credit Card application at the OCBC Orchard MRT branch.

I didn't stayed long at Lucky Plaza. I couldn't bear the noise and crowd in the area, and I hate the sight of our Filipina "modern heroes" flirting with olive-colored guys. Let me clear myself, I am not against Filipina having foreigner boyfriends. What I loathe was the reality that most of these Filipina were married and these foreigners were like vultures who were taking advantage of them. Anyway, I'll not talk about it now. That' not what I wanted to share with you.

Okay, back to what I wanted to tell you. I was strolling along the Orchard road from Lucky Plaza with the intention of walking up to Plaza Singapura when I pass by at the Centrepoint. Since I was only doing street photography, I was though of taking a peep at the atrium to see what new inside. To my surprise, I saw Henry and Arjie setting up their gears. They told me the fashion show today was very good and the models were caucasians and professionals. Hmmm.. and indeed, the models were great and could pose very well. When Marjay appeared at the catwalk, I readily wave my hand to catch her attention. She just smiled when she saw me. Arjie and Henry, look surprised when they realized that one of the models recognize me.

Well, my day was good. I got good fashion show shots. Leavur

Here's a sample of my take. More photos can be seen in my album:

Fashion Marathon

Strange, I didn't felt excited to go out and shoot today. I usually had that fire in my belly when the first scent of Saturday comes into breeze. But not today, and I don't know why. I feel something was wrong with me. Perhaps the frustration has not yet set in, I guess, but I am optimistic that I could find an answer one of this days.

Anyway, I still went out today with my friends. I simply couldn't resist the temptation to take my camera for a stroll. Hah! What can I do? Either I'm infected with the shutter-virus or just a plain camera addict. Whatever!

We went to CentrePoint mall at Orchard to watch the Fashion Marathon. With what I've heard, the show would start from 1pm and would last until 5pm, hence we took our easy time and didn't bother to come early. And as expected, the Clubsnap guys were already filling the front rows when we arrived. We still found a good place though, and then started shooting. But.. ayahh.... the models where just not worth the click of my camera. Okay, given they are not professionals but ordinary "talents" that were pluck from obscurity, at least it would be nice if they knew how to walk properly. Problem was... they were not strutting at the catwalk, they were literally running. And when they pose? Hah! They would flick a pose for a fraction of second and then walk away. How could we take good pictures with that?

Don't ask me if I got good pictures, I didn't.

Frustrated, we went out and proceed to the the nearby Skating Park. We found it more satisfying and blissful watching the kids flying around with their skateboards and inline skates, than cursing the models who were murdering a decent fashion show.

Biennale

I must admit, lately I had some cold feet with my hobby. My frustration has not yet departed from my mind and I have this doubts if my new "addiction" is worth all all the time I've spent. What this frustration is all about? Hah... just that.. I got disappointed thinking that to be a good photographer, all I need to do is master the basic elements of light, shadows, and artistic composition. But with what I learned last week, there a need to master photoshop too, just to enhance and make the picture much more "beautiful" (is there a word for that?).

Cold is my feet I may have said, but when Arjie told me that there will be a show tonight at the Padang for the opening of the Singapore Beinale - an Art Festival, I could hardly resist the temptation. And between cold feet and temptation, hehehe... I choose the one that I am happy the most.

And yes, I went to Padang to watch the Singapore Bienale show. Arjie and Jared were there too, and later Melvin joined too. We saw some local media celebrities, some local artists, and the Prime Minister. Then after the formal ceremonies, a fashion show and a rock concert followed. Of course I shoot and got some good photos. Here's a sample.Bie01

Librodo Workshop

Have you heard of Manny Librodo? If not, then you are not into digital photography addiction. hehehe, pun intended. Seriously, Manny is known in the Philippines for his outstanding portraits, digital gallery in PBase, and series of lectures conducted all over the country. Now, we got a chance to learn from him and listen to his tips on how to improve in our craft.

Excited, I was, I set my alarm clock at six am but... failed to wake up with the rrrrinnngg!!!! I didn't hear it! Silly it may sound, my clock was not defective nor the ringer was just not loud but simply because I was deeply asleep. And you know why I sleep like lard today? I went home at around 4am in the morning. hehehe... I went out with "the girl" last night - not in her place, of course, (I already wrote about it yesterday), but in some neutral places where I wouldn't get into trouble.

Nevertheless, I arrived at our meeting point at the Chinese Garden just in time when Manny started giving briefing on our day's activity. Hmm... so this is Manny! I thought. He's younger than I imagined and, well, looks ordinary for his name. Well, that's the problem when the reputation preceeds a man. People, me included, would expect larger than life personality from the man.

Okay enough for that... let me tell how Manny works.

He told us his camera settings when shooting for portrait: Cloudy -2. Then he explained the importance of light and how to work with the available ambiant lights in the environment. He also emphasized the need to capture the light on the eyes of the subject. It may sound complex if not mystifying but the truth is, these were the basics. Simple yet ignored by most photographers because of their dependence on advance savvy gadgets. Manny just showed us how to go back to the basics and explore our own creativity. He's right! Rafael, Nadal and even the Leonardo da Vinci, all became immortals because they mastered the effects of lights, shadows and colors.

I didn't shoot that much during the workshop. I had less than a hundred pictures taken. What I did most of time was observed and listen on Manny, and I was hoping I can pick up something that is worth remembering. I watch him how he handles the crowd and how he guides the model towards the lights and shadows. Gee, I admit, he has tons of ideas when dealing with the models. I guess, these were accomulated with his years of experience. I also observed his acute sensitivity with the environment and his quickness to adjust when the available light changes. This is one important factor that every photographer should take note when shooting outdoor.

Later in the afternoon, he showed us how he post process his pictures using Photoshop. I was lost with this one, actually, because I don't have much knowledge with Photoshop. I tried to jot down notes but couldn't catch up with the 100mph speed of Manny. Anyway, the organizer promised to provide notes later. Now, after watching Manny how he edit his pictures and makes magic on it, I have decided to put photoshop on my must-learn task. Would you believe that I don't edit my pictures except resize and crop using only Microsoft Picture Manager? That will surely change from now on.

The day was fullfiling. It was nice to learn from the "master" and at the same time, enjoy the camaraderie with my fellow photonski photographers. Frankly, there were many loopholes in the workshop but I let it go considering the size of participants- 30! This one i'll not pass: Yes, Manny guided the models but he didn't teach the photographers how and what to shoot. I was expecting that he would show us his style on framing, composition, angle of shoot, and other advance techniques. But he didn't. Instead, he joined with the group and also take pictures too, leaving the newbies like me clueless on what to do. I am just frustrated!

Hmm... how about the models?

Well, we were lucky to have two beautiful models with us - Kharu and Tessa
Nietto. Kharu is famous as an endorser for Avon products in the
Philippines, while Tessa is better known as the partner of Alex Compton
on that Coffee Mate commercial in the Philippines. Tessa also appears
in international prints for the product Brother Printers. They were
both excellent models.

Here's a sample on my take on Kharu and Tessa - out of the box.Kharu

Say No

What would you do if someone ask for a night out? Hehhee... say no!, politely.

Sus, I felt the surge of dilusion of being guapo which is totally the contrary to the real truth. When was the last time I felt this illusion again? Hay, I can't remember because I never been good looking in my life. Fun and nice-to-be-with perhaps, but never pogi.

Back to what I was saying... I been spending the last three days with Mai, a client whom I was trying to help. We resolved the major items and had breakthrough to all major bottlenecks, and though there were still pending issues, the project overall was most likely to succeed. For me, it was just another day with my work, normal and event less just like any other projects. But for Mai, it was her ticket to redemption - she said. Whatever that meant, I believe it must be important.

When dealing with client, I always had the tendency to be over extending. I meant, I always make sure that I had given everything I could just to help - even if eats up my own personal time. This client is not an exception. I did work with her over extended hours and weekends just make sure the project is completed. I guess, I "may have "overextended" myself with this one that we had gotten "closer" than what was necessary. Hay... heto na naman ako, didn't learn my lesson.

Yeah, I know. I had to nip it in the bud before something goes wrong. That is why I said NO when she invited me to hang out at her place tonight. It's very tempting, I admit. She's alone in her apartment, we could go "wild" and she would be a willing victim... but for what? Hurt her in the long run? Besides, I got my job on the line and surely that's not a very good idea. Huh! Career suicide - no way.

I am a changed man. (Lightning Bolt !!!! and Thunders... Blammm!!!!!)

By the way, did I do the right thing? Teka.. sayang yun ah?

Sorting

I had a boring day, today. My schedules were surprisingly light and I don't have a client visit. I even over-nap during lunch time. hehhee

Night time... I tried to surf in the net, talk to some friend in Yahoo Messenger but lost esteem along the way. I didn't find any interesting in my email and I felt lazy writing on my blog. I did browse on my old photo files though, and tried to edit some. After three hours, I posted the shoots I have taken last Sunday during our street photography with Arjie.

As mentioned last Sunday, my photos were not great - they were all ordinary. I didn't even bother to edit the pics. I just crop the edges, resize to smaller size, pasted a copyright logo, and that's it. And to save space, I save it with the lowest jpeg quality.

If you still interested to take a peek, here's the link to my photo album

Street Photography

Pressure in the office had been so high during these past weeks. I was assigned to a "challenging" client and I had difficulty with the product. To keep up my head above water, I have to skip most of my shooting schedules and I have to spend extended hours in the office. Infact, for the last two weekends I just stayed home and work via VPN connection.

But today, I declared I had enough with work. I must go out and shoot otherwise, I will go insane! I need to take my drug - my camera, and I need to stimulate myself with pictures to keep me alive. Asus! addict na talaga. hehehe...

* * * * * *

With no objective and subject that I could think of, I decided to walk around Orchard Road and do street photography. Who knows, I might bumped onto onto some nice subject or events.

Indeed, I was right. While taking a picture of the Wizma Atria building, I Net01heard someone at my back complained that I have stepped on her toes. When I turned around, whoah! I found these three sexy ladies standing just few inches in front of me (I even accidentally elbowed her b***s). I was so stunned that my tongue got stuck in my mouth and forgot to apologize. They just smiled and said it was okay. I was quick to recover my senses though, and immediately started a conversation. And to keep them from going away, I asked if they would like to come with me for coffee. To my surprise, they accepted the peace offering. So I took them to the nearby Starbucks and .... hehehe take photos of one of the ladies. Oi, I didn't she's pretty - I just said sexy, and If you ask me who she was and what's her work here? Nah, I would just answer you flat - I forgot her name and I am not interested to know where she work and where she lives. I didn't even ask for her number. Nagbago na ako noh. (Blaaam!!!!! lightning strikes). But... hehehe.. I gave her my card!

An hour later, I was back to the Orchard Road walking aimlessly. I thought of calling Arjie who coincidentally was also shooting at the nearby area. We agreed to meet up at Lucky Plaza and then continued walking towards Istana (the Malacanang of Singapore). It was almost dusk and we know that shooting at low lights would be challenging, but we still go on. We just mount our external flash just in case it gets too dark. At last we got lucky when we reached Plaza Singapura. We were in time as the street dancing show of NUS students was about to start. I took few shots, analyze it, and then decided to use external flash. I also maximized my ISO to catch up with the movement of the subject. The result of my shoot were just average - not captivating. Street01_1There were two elements that were missing: sufficient light and good composition. Hmm... I choose the wrong spot. The picture you see on the right side is of low quality. Wait next week, I'll provide you with link to my website for good quality pix.

Overall, my first street photography was okay. It was not satisfactory but at least I enjoyed it. I might do it again. hehhee

Tax

Would you believe that I misread my Tax Assessment and thought that my tax will overdue on Oct 10? Gee, good thing I clean up the house today and accidentally browse onto my important documents and found the Inland Revenue notice. I was shock to realize that I was all wrong. My tax was long overdue since Aug 10!

Huh... Now, I am worried. I need to pay it within the week otherwise I'll be burdened with penalties. Tsk tsk tsk. I am out of budget again!

Bad Dream

I was catching my breath when I woke up from a bad dream. Hus!, I though it was real and I could still feel some goosebumps as I rush towards the kitchen to get some water. It was scary, not on the horror side, but because it was about realities of my life.

'Twas 4:00 am, when I gazed on the wall clock. I decided to watch TV for a while but after just 10 minutes, I easily fall asleep at the sofa. And to my horrors... the dream continued. Whoah! I struggled for few minutes before I finally recover my senses. After that, I decided to wake up for good and take a shower to ready myself for work - at 5 in the morning.

6am.

I was at the bus stop watching school children from across the street who were rushing towards the nearby primary school. It was still dark (sun rises past 7:00 in Singapore), the breeze was cool, and I was the only office worker at the station. Realizing that I was alone, it gave me an eerie feeling. I had thought of leaving the house early to help myself forgot that bad dream, but gee... I was wrong. My hair started to raise.

What was the dream all about?

Hmm.. forget it. I don't feel comfortable talking about it yet.

Fireworks

Ever since I started to pick up a camera, there are two subjects that I have long wanted to shoot: lightning and fireworks. When I earned my first film camera, the Kodak KB10, my first subject was thunderstorm and lightning. I remember, I have to climb to the rooftop of the Engineering Bldg at Xavier University just to catch a good view of a lightning strikes. I could finish a roll of 36-shots film shooting nothing but lightnings. And if not of the prohibitive cost of film development and printing, surely I would easily consume two rolls of film. But for a struggler like me, every cent counts. Hence, when I pursued my graduate studies, I shelved my love for photography and said goodbye to my camera.

Huh! nostalgia. Nag e-emote na naman ako. tsk tsk tsk

Now that I am back with a digital camera, the opportunity to shoot in a fireworks festival was simply overwhelming. Com'on, please understand my over enthusiasm. You see, I never had a chance to do it 15 years ago with my film camera because we were not that fortunate in Cagayan de Oro to see one. Kwitis siguro, pwede pa but fireworks display? nah, in our dreams na lang perhaps. And now, Singapore not only have one fireworks at the Marina bay, but four different kinds fireworks displays and will be spread all over the week (not counting the NDP fireworks at Kallang). That's why the photonski team were in full gear and I had been receiving tons of emails in the discussion thread. Aba, hindi ako patalo noh. I bought a cable release, even if I don't know how to use it. hehehe. Eh kase, they said I would need it to properly control the camera trigger on bulb mode. Engot naman, bumili.

The first show was Team Italy held last Saturday at 9:00pm. Ita_01_copy
It was a good show, they said, but I failed to capture any outstanding photo because I choosed the wrong side of the Bay.
All the while I thought the fireworks would start at the middle of the Marina Bay, so I choose a spot where I could see the Fullerton as my background. But when the explosion started on my left flank, I just realized that I was screwed up. There was a large barge right in front of us and all we could see was the exploding colors in the air and nothing in the foreground. Five minutes had elapsed, I made a quick decision. I changed position to avoid the barge, and... was a able to salvage few "nice" shoots - though not acceptable for a professional. Here's one with the barge in the foreground and the moon on the upper left frame.

Buti na lang nakabawi ako last Tuesday with Team Singapore. Sg_01_copy_1

I did managed to squeeze in between the bushes at the Splanade bridge, hence my picture had better composition and had better framing. And yes, the moon added an accent to the view. Overall, I got plenty of good shoots. Just don't ask how itchy it feels, afterwards. Well, I was not alone with the predicament. There were a few dozen photographers too along the bushes and my photo buddy Arjie was just one of them. :D Just like the old saying goes, you're never be a true blue photographer unless you learn how to crawl, climb, and in this case - "be one with the bushes". hehehe

Knowing that the Splanade bridge would be the best spot, Cal_04
I came back as early as 6pm last Friday for the Team New Caledonia. That's would be three hours early you would think but I tell you, I almost couldn't get a place had I not move the trash bin. My buddy Arjie didn't make the cut and had to settle with the bushes again. hehehe... only this time he got a cleaner and wider area - no more itchy feeling. After three hours of seemingly endless waiting time, the fireworks fired with its full splendor. It was far better and bigger than the last two teams. What made the fireworks display outstanding was not the explosion and the exploding colors, but the rhythm of the sounds, lights and explosions. I admit, that was the best fireworks display that i've ever seen. korni ko!

And here comes Saturday's show, the Team France. Fr_01
This team was touted to be the best considering they were the presentor of last year's National Day Parade fireworks. If yesterday's show was spectacular, I was expecting this one will be better. And for our shooting place? hmm... I wanted to go back to the bridge but I decided otherwise. I thought, I already have too many shoot at the same spot and I believe finding another place would be the right thing. So, I went to the extreme end of Splanade bayview, far away from the ECP bridge. The view was not that good compared to our spot yesterday but it offers a different angle. Well, my pictures were not that bad at all. I was all good.

NDP 2006

All Singaporeans had been waiting for this day - the National Day Parade. Today, the tiny city-state marks its 41st anniversary as a nation, and is looking forward to reinvent itself into a global city. Just watching the vibrant faces of the people and listening to its leader, I am sure these multi-culture multi-racial people - though tiny they are - will achieve that status.

Whew, sana someday... ang Pinas will also be a 1st world country... and sana within in my lifetime!

Only singaporeans and permanent residents can get the ticket for the parade - save for the few VIPs - and for ordinary expats like us, we can either watch it on TV or picnic near the Kallang River basin to catch the spectacle of the fireworks display. Well, a photobug like me surely would not settle sitting down infront of TV. I planned to pitch my tripod along Tanjong Rue together with the Photonski team, but a friend gave me a call telling me that she can give me an access to the rooftop of Pebble Bay Condominium. Hmm... that would be very nice, I thought. I'll have a good arial view of the the National Stadium and my foreground would be the Indoor Stadium and the Kallang Basin. So I scouted the area seven hours earlier to find the best angle for my tripod.

My fortunes did just stop there. While catching the festivities around the stadium, I met this photographer who just gave me his extra NDP ticket. A ticket inside? - wow!!! I literally jump for joy and embrace this "smelly" stranger out of happiness. He then shoo me away and tell me to catch the show inside. In my hurry, I forgot his name. I only managed to say thank you and that was all. I was really really happy. Lady luck smile at me once more. Yess!!!

The first sight that greeted me when I enter the National Stadium was a sea of red and whiteMerge
colored Singaporeans cheering, clapping, and shouting for their country. Believe me, the mere sight of people chering and singing happy birthday and then shaking hands to all strangers sitting along their seats made my hair stand. What a beautiful sight and strange feeling indeed. And you know what was on my mind that time? I felt proud that I am a part of this celebration - I just got my PR, remember :D

Few minutes later, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause as the Red Lion jumpers started to parachute their way into the field. Few minutes later, a loud siren overwhelms the place that signals the start of the parade. The civil and military contingent started to converge into the parade ground, then followed by "display of power" by the Singapore total defense force. Oh I forgot to mention, Singaporeans love their leaders. You can easily feel with the way they welcome and cheer their leaders who made a grand entrance at the VIP area.

I didn't watch the whole show - I wanted to - but I cannot take a good firework photo if I am inside. So I left the stadium in the middle of those very beautiful performances and shows. The next thing I remember: I was running towards Tanjong Rue so I will not miss the fireworks display. Huh, just imagine how my fats burns and pours out a river of sweat all over my body because I run for 15 minutes nonstop. And I just arrived at the rooftop in the nick of time. I had less than one minute to setup my tripod, mount my camera, set the corret exposure setttings, and make some test shots.

Nevertheless, I captured some nice fireworks in my camera.

Day Out

The EveryNation Everynation01_1church pays tribute for the National Day celebration of the country. And for this service, the youth prepared a very nice dance interpretation (prepared by a former Manuever dancer) that tries to portray a youth being cool through dancing but remain focus with God.
Yes, I enjoyed the presentation but that was nothing compared to the word delivered by the ever fiery pastor. The message was wonderful, was heartening and soothing for a sinful soul like mine. I could feel my hair started to rise as I listened intently on every word that comes out from his mounth. Oh I was really blessed, and well at least for today, I did drop off my "horns".
Huh... sinners.
* * * * * * *
After the church service, Che invited us for lunch at her place. With Jared, Arjie and Ralph, we went to Glendale Condo at Bukit Batok and spend most of the afternoon. We did nothing but watch DVD movie, enjoy the plentiful food at the table, and others tried to sleep despite of all the noise. I guess, we spend most of the afternoon at the place before deciding to visit MS Color to buy a 50mm lens for Arjie and Che. I went with them so I can also do a test on the new 17-55/f2.8 lens. Jared had been telling my that this baby was a very good lens, and indeed he was right. Infact, I was almost tempted to swipe my Credit Card but just decided otherwise on the last minute. I have to get the 70-200/f2.8 first, and for sure that would cost me lots and lots of money.
I had enough for the day. After parting ways at around 6pm, I immediately went home and take a nap for an hour. I just woke up at around 8pm for my dinner and also to prepare for my clothes for the coming weekdays.
Past 9pm, Arjie gave me a ring and told me to read the blog of my photobuddy Jared. Surprised, I just followed him and open my computer and browse on Jared's site. Hehehe... I was amused. Jared posted a sleeping picture of me at the train. Sa totoo lang ha, the pic was nicely taken and the presentation? I tell you, with the matching poem of Bolshoi... it was overall, superb. Well, magaling naman talaga 'tong photobuddy ko kaya lang minsan lagi UDP ang dating, hindi TCP. Oh, he also read my blog. Peace man.
I was still laughing when I called Arjie and told him that I already read the blog and also told him that I was so amused I downloaded the pix and posted it in my main friendster photo. "Gusto mo makaganti", he asked? Hmm... why not? Arjie gave a pic of our friend Jared that was taken this afternoon. Jared02a_1The pic was funny too but I just felt that even if I post it here, I could not match the impact of Jared's blog. Our friend had a natural artistic talent and skills with words. That's one thing I need to work on.
Anyway, i'll post the pix of Jared and the link for his Blog. Let me know your reaction.

This is the "art" of Jared

Fashion Revolt-ution

With the national day just beyond the horizon, Singaporeans had been so busy - left and right - with so many festivies happening all over the island. There's sports championships, fashion competition, "beauty" contest, fireworks displays, and of course the much awaited National Day Parade which will be held this coming Aug 9. I've been watching the participants every Saturday for practice and had also watched the preview last week. Gee.. it's wonderful and the show is very much well prepared. Did you know that they started the every-saturday rehearsals two months ago? They are that good, really!

Just a pity though. I don't have a ticket to watch them on the actual National Day Parade this coming Wednesday. Next year, perhaps!

Anyway, there's still many activities for a photosnapper like me. Like today. I went to Bugis to watch a competition called Fashion Revolt-ution and then shoot on the fashion show. I actually didn't know this, but my photo buddy from photonski tipped me. Without second thoughts, I immediately proceed to the place. As usual, I found the club snap photographers already hogging the front rows. And further back, I saw some photonskiBugis01 photographers too. I didn't stay long. I just took few pictures on the samba-dancing ladies,
and few pictures on the runway models. I didn't find interest with models when I realized that these were the same bunch of ladies who strut last March during the fashion festival. I didn't wonder when I saw Bridgette come out of the stage.

I decided to leave early and try to catch the bikini contest at Wild Wild Wet water park. I'll more talk about the bikini contest in my next post.

Deficit

Last day of the month.

Had my payday falls on the last day of the month, I should be happy by now. Problem is, it's not! I still have to wait five more days before grace showers from the bank. Now, you wonder why I worried so much? Hmm, this is because I am running on deficit for the past ten days.

This is not the typical me, my friends would attest that. I am usually thrifty and would make sure I have enough for my day-to-day life plus a little savings. But not this month. My first time in the past 5 years - I spend more than I could earn in a month. Worse, I even eat up my little savings. Don't ask were did I throw those money, I wasted it for nothing.

Huh, I am becoming too loose with my spending. And I guess, it's high time to rethink my budget and my hobby.

Sports Illustrated

Thanks heaven, it's weekend again!

I was a bit excited today. I was invited to join a bikini shooting - ala sports illustrated - at Che's place, and we will have Jeanne Harn as our model. Gee, I had long wanted to shoot with this type of theme, and today was my first break to practice then learn from the masters who will be attending the session.

Indeed, I got what I wished for! I have taken wonderful shots.

Where's the pictures? Nah... I can't post it. We don't have a model release agreement yet, but don't worry. I'll post it here someday - promise.

Stressful

I already promised not to write about work, but forgive me for breaking it. I am just not okay today and I need an outlet. Hah!

Remember Jiang my new PM? That asshole? Alamah! He's hitting me again.

Just when I thought that we have neutralized the critical issues at OCBC project, this new PM made an "issue" with our customer. I don't know if he is trying to gain pogi points or he's just simply stupid. He had a problem listening and would like to insist on what he though is okay - which turns out the contrary most of the time. He even solicited unwelcomed argument with our client to the point that the customer threatened to request for another PM. What's worse, he wanted me to explain in full details - I meant step by step procedure - on how I troubleshoot the problem on networks - because he wants to show off to the client that he understand the situation. And when I refused to discuss it over the phone, he raised his voice. In retaliation, I put down the phone an refused to answer his calls.

Fuck him!!! Ayahh! He's picking a fight with me? He really don't know what trouble he's getting into.

I never back out from any fight not even bend for reconciliation, and when I hit back, I do it so hard that my opponent would curse me in their entire life. In my previous corporate life, I have run into many foes and I would not survived and rose to the ranks if I didn't battered them to pieces. I didn't have regrets whatsoever - it's just work. They have bruised me too - badly!

And this newbie is picking a fight with me? tsk tsk tsk...

Before he can do any move, I called up the sales manager of the project and explained the situation. Then I called our department head and also explained what really happened. Few minutes later, the new PM send me an SMS requesting for a meeting. I didn't answered his text message. I want him to complain to our head and turn this into a full blown trouble.

I was angry!

Permanent Resident

After eight long weeks, I finally received the letter that I had been expecting from the Immigration and Checkpoint Authority. Actually, I applied for Permanent Residence here in Singapore two months ago... and you know the result?

APPROVED!!!!

Hehehe... Now I got an assurance that I can stay in Singapore. No more worries that my employer will suddenly dump me and deport me to Canada or Philippines. Being a PR would bring lots of benefits. Some of it would be a better bargaining power when applying to other job, I can ask for higher fee from my current employer, and I can bargain for more benefits. More importantly, I am now allowed to own properties in Singapore - I am buying a house. Yes!!!!

On the other hand, I would immediately feel the pinch of Central Provident Fund contribution to my take home pay. Anyway, that's my forced savings and I know someday I could use that on rainy days.

Now I have my Singapore PR, Canadian, what's next? EU PR... hehehehe

Cars

If driving is not my "thing", then don't expect me to love cars!

But that exactly what I have done this afternoon. Jared and Melvin enticed me (again) to watch a car show at Sentosa. At first I refused, thinking I wouldn't enjoy watching cars. Jared for sure would be very please knowing that is his passion - not me! But when Melvin told me that he will be shooting for the "babes" on the cars on display, that flashes the green signal for me. Hmm... this might just turn out exciting, I though.

Well, there were lot of cars - beautiful cars, nice car racing events, and plenty of moto gears to scout, but babes? Nah. Okay, there were few but not on the caliber of my liking.
I think, I just expected too much. I've watch similar shows in Japan and HK but this one was... never mind.

The ladies deserves appreciation, I acknowledge that, for being sporty and game. It's not easy to be on display where men will be ogling on you all day long. Hence, I just took pictures of these gutsy girls.... and forget the cars. I'll leave that to Jared - he's good on it.

FE-160

I wake up early today. The day was perfect, just as good as my health and enthusiasm. Hehehe.. over acting na naman!

But seriously, I joined in the Olympus Scavenger Hunt today together with the photonski guys. It was a team competiion and we fielded 4 teams. The first team the Agila Team with Marc as the team leader, then the Green Team with Bong as team leader, Goryo's Angels Team with Goryo as team leader, and the pa-cute team. There were other teams composed mostly of local Singaporeans and they look determined and had advantage over us - they have cars! But that did not dampen our spirits. Sabi pa nga ni Goryo "Pinoy tayo marunong at makakagawa ng paraan".

Indeed, he was right. A Pinoy team won, and you know what? It was our team! Yeheeey.....!

We beat 11 other teams and got an Olympus FE-160 for each member of the team. Our team composed of Goryo, Charlotte, Alain, Henry and me, did what others could not dare to do - run fast. Oh, you should have seen how a 200 pounder boys runs. It would look like and elephant, a hippo, a urangutang, and a rhino is on the loose. Spare our lady, for she was fit and was intrumental for the 500-meter dash to the last work task.

Frankly, the contest was more on running and exploring the city, ala Amazing Race, rather than a photo competition. We were given 10 task. In each task, we need to take a picture of a particular landmark or take macro/wide angle shot on an identified subject. No consideration of the composition or technical attributes, just take the picture. This was to the dismay of most contestants who was expecting competition on skills and creativity.

Well, I couldn't complain... we won! hehehe. Here's my price

And the photonski teams...

Pantene, Pond's and Mutya

Teka bakit medyo commercial yata ang title?

Kase po, one of our our models last Saturday was Jeanne Harn former model for Pantene Shampoo and Pond's, while the other was Abbey Cruz a runner-up of the 2005 Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant. Now, can you imagine how pretty the girls could be? Yes, they are not only pretty - they are very very pretty!

Sabi pa nga ng lady photographer namin na si Phoebe Aviles dun kay Jeanne: "your beauty is elemental".

That words actually kept me wondering. What does she meant for that? It sounds like our model has elven beauty traces - aka Liv Tyler look-a-like. Hehehe.

Basta for me, I just enjoy watching the masters Marc, Raph and Tolitz perfecting their craft in photography. Of course, I join in the fray and took pictures too but I did it with prudence. Would you believe, I have only taken less than 50 pictures? Gee, that's far from my average of 300 shots per outing. But it's all worth it. I learned how to frame the models, how to capture emotion on print (digital image), and importantly I obtain first-hand learning experience from the gurus.

And the pictures?

Sorry! I really wanted to post it online but I still haven't secured the permission from the models. I don't want to invite trouble like being sued. Kaya, you there my friends in the Philippines, get some pamphlets of Pantene shampoo, and surely you'll get the idea of our model.

Pictures? Kulet! Next time na sabi.
